Colgate Herbal Toothpaste: Review

In our house everyone is responsible for buying their own toothpaste. It wouldn’t have to be this way if everyone could just remember to close a cap, and not be so messy with the toothpaste. So instead of the entire family sharing one tube, we now buy our own.

Mine sort of ran out this morning… I tried really hard to push one last use out of my usual tube of Crest, but she had her last run the day before. I had to brush my teeth though, so I searched the bottom cabinet to see what the rest of my family had stored away. I came across 4 cool options, but one particular one stuck out as cool; Colgate Herbal Toothpaste!

Delightful. I’d never tried this herbal stuff. I removed it from the cabinet, took a quick glance at the Herbal promises, and to be honest there was nothing there that surprised me.

In the toothpaste they included some odd herbs that I didn’t think I’d ever see included in toothpaste; but here they were, chamomile, myrrh, sage, and eucalyptus.

According to the tube, it’d strengthen my teeth.

Okay…but what’s the herbal stuff all about, and where is the description about how these herbs would be helpful to my gums and teefis?!

Ah, no matter. I was using it either way.

Packaging:

Colgate Herbal Toothpaste comes in your usual toothpaste shaped tube, with a screw on, screw off cap. The tube itself has the official Colgate logo on it, but to the very end of the tube were pictures of herbs; which look more like flowers to me. The word Herbal is also displayed on the tube.

My Use:

I squeezed a dollop of the toothpaste onto my toothbrush and took a quick glance at it.

Um… I was sort of yucked out.

Colgate Herbal Toothpaste was slightly runny, and was a sick off whitish grayish color, which (this is nasty) sort of reminded me of bird plop. Yep, I was about to brush my teeth with paste that looked like a substance that feel from a birds A (blank, blank word). Natures remedy! Hah!

I ran the toothpaste under some water to remove the weird runny substance, and I brought my brush to my mouth, and began brushing in my usual manner.

The taste was what caught me first. It was straight up disgusting. I wondered how my mom was using this crap everyday.

It tasted like mint, with some odd sick flavor that I really cannot even pin point. All in all it was like brushing with some mint, mixed with mud, mixed with licorice, mixed with nasty yellow Listerine that no one uses, with some rose. (I imagine that this is what a rose would taste like if I were to chew on it anyway).

I was able to tolerate it, but it was definitely something I would not be using again the next morning.

As far as fresh breath goes, the mint flavor does stick around for a wee bit of time, but it is not the type of mint you would expect. If you have ever chewed on actual mint berries this is exactly what the feeling, and flavor would be in your mouth. It also does not last long, so don’t expect minty fresh breath all morning long.

Overall:

Colgate Herbal Toothpaste is terrible.

I recommend it only to those who have used herbal toothpastes in the past; and enjoyed them.
Everyone else…it’s a rude awakening if you have never used herbal pastes before.
