The Negative Effects of Energy Drinks

Energy drinks contain a number of vitamins and other healthy additives, but some also contain caffeine. I am used to consuming caffeine since I usually drink a glass or two of soda pop each day, but I was not accustomed to the amount of caffeine in the energy drinks that I consumed. I purchased a popular energy-boosting low carbohydrate beverage when it was on sale for $1 a can, but the investment was a huge mistake. Instead of boosting my energy and increasing my daily productivity, I felt terrible for days on end. The negative effects of the beverages far outweighed anything positive they might have provided, and I will never drink them again.

Caffeine Related Jitters and Overeating

The energy drinks that I consumed included a warningthat said not to drink more than three servings of the beverages each day. I consumed two, and I did not like the negative effects that I experienced. Anyone that has ever consumed a high amount of caffeine knows how it can cause jitters and an unsettling feeling. Although I am not a lightweight, I experienced all of the negative effects full force.

I could not tell the difference between caffeine related jitters and low blood sugar after consuming the energy drinks, and I ended up eating more food to try and correct the problem. The cans only contained 20 calories each, but I made up for it by eating cookies, candy and other sweets since I felt as if my blood sugar levels had dropped each time I consumed the drinks. The caffeine also made me feel ravenous, and I gained a few pounds in the process.

Extreme Fatigue

Energy drinks are supposed to increase vigor and give users a livelier feeling, but they did not work as I had hoped. I might have felt a little livelier while in the process of drinking the beverages, but just a couple of hours later I was extremely fatigued. I took more naps than ever during the week that I consumed two energy drinks a day, and they did not increase my productivity in the least. I felt terrible, and they actually decreased my desire to work. I could barely move off of the couch let alone do anything productive.

Feeling Very Low
Days Later

After my bargain energy drinks were all gone, the negative effects lingered on. For three days after drinking two each day, I felt awful. I was more tired than usual, and because of the lack of high amounts of caffeine, I experienced headaches.

If a person wants to increase their energy in a safe and natural way, they should try juicing. Natural fruit and vegetable juices do not have side effects, and the results are not negative. I will never again consume energy drinks that are not completely natural because of the numerous negative effects.
