Cleaning Diamond Jewelry: Simple Home Remedies

While exploring booths set up by individuals at my local county fair this past summer, I discovered a fantastic product for cleaning diamond jewelry. The lady who was eager to sell her product voluntarily cleaned and shined my diamond rings in a matter of seconds. The product worked quite well, but I couldn’t see spending $7.00 on a tiny bottle of diamond jewelry cleaner. I thanked the lady for cleaning my diamond rings, but I politely refused her offer. My cousin is a jeweler, and there are several home remedies that are safe to use for cleaning diamond rings. Expensive cleaner is definitely not required!

Precautionary Statement

The following home remedies and instructions are for cleaning diamonds and gold. Soft stones such as opals and pearls should not be cleaned using the following home remedies and methods. Be sure to consult a jeweler for information on cleaning other gemstones. In addition, avoid touching clean diamonds with your bare hands. The natural oils in the skin will dull the brilliant shine.

Necessary Supplies

Before cleaning diamond rings and other diamond jewelry it’s important to have the necessary supplies on hand. I use a small colander and a soft bristle toothbrush when cleaning my diamond rings and other jewelry. The colander helps prevent rings and other small items from going down the drain, and a soft bristle brush is perfect for cleaning away debris that collects beneath grooves and diamond settings. I also use a small piece of soft flannel or a microfiber cloth for drying and polishing.

Glass Cleaner

Quality glass cleaner is ideal for cleaning and shining diamond rings and other jewelry. Simply spray a little glass cleaner on the jewelry, and gently scrub away any debris. Soap, lotion, and other gunk tends to accumulate beneath the settings, so pay careful attention to these areas. Rinse away the glass cleaner under warm running water, and dry your rings and other diamond jewelry with a clean soft cloth.

Ammonia

Household ammonia can also be used for cleaning diamond rings and other jewelry. Mix half water and half ammonia, and allow the rings or other diamond jewelry to soak for approximately 15 seconds. Remove the diamond rings and any other jewelry, and gently scrub each piece with a soft toothbrush. Rinse well under running water, and dry with a clean non-abrasive cloth.

Lestoil

Most people have heard of Lestoil, but for those who haven’t it’s a popular cleaner that works well for a variety of household cleaning purposes. Pour a little Lestoil into a bowl, and swish it around for several seconds before removing each piece and gently scrubbing them with a soft-bristle toothbrush. Rinse the rings or other diamond jewelry thoroughly under warm running water, and dry as directed above.

Dawn Dishwashing Liquid

Rings tend to accumulate grease and oils beneath the settings, and Dawn Dishwashing Liquid is fantastic for cleaning diamond rings and other jewelry. It’s safe and mild, and it does a great job. Simply fill a bowl with warm soapy water, and allow the rings to soak for several minutes. Upon removal, gently scrub away any dirt, grime, and accumulated grease, and rinse it away under warm running water. Dry your clean diamond rings and other jewelry with soft flannel or a microfiber cloth, and wear it proudly as it sparkles and shines.
