Birthday Party Holiday Themes: April Fool’s Day

If your child’s birthday falls around April Fool’s Day, you may be thinking about incorporating the holiday into your party’s theme. Look for opportunities to play fun, yet harmless pranks on your guests and their parents. Use gummy worms in food. Slime and silly string will be a big hit too. Add touches to your party such as fake poop, fake vomit, whoopee cushions, and plastic snakes, bugs and rats.

For the menu, serve fun and kooky dishes, such as kitty litter cake (looks like kitty litter but tastes like spice cake; serve it with a pooper scooper), a meatloaf cake (cover a cake-shaped meatloaf with mashed potatoes colored with food dye, the guests will think it’s a real cake until they bite into it) or puppy chow (looks like real puppy chow but is actually Chex cereal covered in peanut butter, chocolate and powdered sugar.

The following are some fun game and activity ideas for a April Fool’s Day themed birthday party. Use these ideas or put your own spin on them to come up with some creative and fun activities for the kids.

April Fact or April Fool?

Prior to the party, make up a list of 15 “facts”, making sure some are fiction. Use the birthday boy or girl as the topic of the facts, making sure you don’t embarrass your little one. For instance, listing that your child wets the bed would not be much fun if it were truly a fact! If you’d rather not use your child, look up interesting facts on the internet for your list. At the party, read the list aloud. Have the children guess which are fact and which are fool. The child with the most answers correct wins a prize.

Egg Toss

Organize a traditional egg toss game, but instead of tossing real eggs, have the teams toss Jello jibbler eggs slathered in cooking oil.

Simon Says Opposites

This is a fun twist on the classic ‘Simon Says’ game. For ‘Simon Says Opposites’, the guests are to do the opposite of what Simon Says. Anyone who does exactly what Simon Says is out. Children are so conditioned to do what Simon Says, it will be a challenge to do the opposite of what he says.

Pin the Booger on the Nose

Yes, sounds gross, but will be a big hit with the kids. Give each child a piece of green bubble gum and have them open and chew it. One at a time, blindfold each child and turn them around three times. Then have them put their bubble gum “booger” on their nose, and then have them Pin the Booger on the Nose, using their nose to place the booger on a poster board nose.
