Best Oktoberfest Decorating Ideas from a Former Party Planner

It’s almost time to don your lederhosen and grab your beer steins for Oktoberfest. Do you have all your party plans in place yet? If not, you may want to check out a few of my Oktoberfest decorating ideas. Each decorating idea mentioned is one that I have used myself during my years as a party planner. Here’s a quick rundown on each one:

Table Linens

When it comes to Oktoberfest table linens, there are two color schemes to consider. You could opt to stick with the colors found in the State of Bavaria’s flag (light blue and white) or the colors found in Germany’s flag (black, red and gold). Over the course of my party planning career, I have used both color schemes. The light blue and white color scheme, however, is considered the more appropriate of the two options. I’d suggest that you consider using table skirting, table overlays, table runners, cloth napkins and chair linens with tie backs. You can typically purchase or rent table linens through companies like Linen Tablecloth for a reasonable fee.

Table Centerpieces

Of course your table linen color choice will help to dictate what type of Oktoberfest centerpiece would be appropriate. Personally, I like using balloons or fresh flowers for my Oktoberfest celebrations. With that said, Cal-Ideas, and other party supply shops, often sell Oktoberfest balloon weights in the shape of a beer stein. In my experience, the Oktoberfest balloon weights stand about 5 inches tall and feature the colors of the State of Bavaria. Each balloon weight will typically cost you $6. A package of 100 balloons will generally set your finances back an additional $9. If you prefer to use a floral arrangement, I’d recommend that you dress up the arrangement by adding a few miniature flags into the mix.

Buffet Table

In my experience, it is best to use minimal but elegant decorations around the buffet table because of the food involved. I like covering the buffet table in linens and then rimming it with table skirting, colored tulle and LED rope lights. If no electrical outlets are located nearby, I’d recommend skipping the light-up tulle and going with a basic Oktoberfest bunting instead. In general, a 5.5 inch long Oktoberfest bunting will run you $17 through party supply shops like Century Novelty. The tulle, on the other hand, will typically cost you $1 a yard through retailers like Tulle Source. The LED rope lights tend to sell for $31 (3 feet strand). You can usually purchase LED rope light through assorted specialty retailers like Lighting Universe.

Other Decorations

Last but not least, you may also want to consider hanging Oktoberfest banners and flags from the ceiling. You can generally purchase Oktoberfest banners and flags through party supply shops and specialty retailers like Northcote Imports, LLC. I’d also recommend rimming the tops of the windows with additional Oktoberfest bunting and LED rope lights as well. In my experience, it helps to add ambiance to the room or tent.
