Best 5 Kid Friendly, Indoor Places Located Near Richmond, Virginia

Are your kids tired of being stuck at home? If so, you may want to think about visiting a few of Richmond, Virginia’s great indoor attractions. In my experience, there are several spots that are well suited for families with children. With that said, here’s a brief look at a few of the best ones:

Children’s Museum of Richmond

The Children’s Museum of Richmond has three locations located across the state. They are referred to as Central, Short Pump and Chesterfield. Each location typically opens daily at 9:30 a.m. and offers different exhibits. I would recommend the Short Pump location in Glen Allen to parents of toddlers and preschoolers. It features exhibits based on children’s literature. Older children may feel more comfortable at the museum’s Central location in Richmond. It features a Town Square exhibit where the kids may pretend to be adults. Admission fees start at a modest $7 per person.

Science Museum of Virginia

The Science Museum of Virginia is located in Richmond. In my opinion, it features amazing exhibits that are suitable for kids of all ages. Parents of preschoolers and toddlers may want to head towards the Imagination Playground. It features opportunities for free play. Kindergarteners and elementary school age kids may prefer the Light and Vision exhibit or the Science Unplugged area. They both offer play and learning opportunities. The museum traditionally opens Tuesday through Sunday with varying hours of operation. Admission fees start at $9 per person.

Maymont Estate

The Maymont Estate is located in Richmond. I would recommend it to parents of older children. It features an onsite mansion, wildlife exhibits, carriage rides, tram rides and a farm barn. Visitors may also explore the estate’s grounds, weather permitting. A concession area is located on premise too. The only downside to visiting the facility is that prices of the onsite activities are typically ala carte. Hence, depending on how ambitious your kids are, you may be reaching for your wallet quite frequently.

Keystone Tractor Works

Do your children love playing with miniature tractors, farm toys and miniature vehicles in general? If so, I’d suggest that you think about visiting the Keystone Tractor Works. It is located in Colonial Heights. What makes the museum a stand out is its humongous display of antique and modern day tractors. It also contains classic car exhibits, antique road trucks and other vintage items that the kids may enjoy seeing in person. On average, it will take you roughly 30 minutes to reach the museum by car from Richmond. The facility opens daily and admission costs start at $5 per person.

Virginia Aviation Museum

Are your children more enamored with planes than they are tractors? Well then, I’d recommend that you consider visiting the Virginia Aviation Museum instead. It is located in Richmond. Exhibits and areas your children will undoubtedly adore are the Piper Club, the J.D. Benn Theater and the Historic Aircraft display. The museum tends to open Tuesday through Sunday with fluctuating hours of operation. Admission fees start at $5 per person.
