Autumn Craft Ideas for Kids

Autumn is a wonderful time of year! The leaves are changing colors and the air is starting to get a little crisp and cooler. That means it’s not too hot to go outside . Here are some great craft ideas to get you in the mood for Autumn.

Make a Scarecrow: This is a wonderful fun idea for any kid. Get some old clothes and stuff them with straw. You can also use dried leaves to stuff your scarecrow. Use a burlap or some sort of study bag for the head. Put a face on your scarecrow by gluing buttons or other objects onto the bag. Then top off your scarecrow by giving him a hat. Tie your scarecrow to a fence or a post. You can even put him in a vegetable garden to scare off birds. Put your scarecrow in a chair or just prop him up on your porch or stoop so guests can see him. Add a pumpkin next to him for a great Autumn look.

Rock Art: Autumn is a great time to rock hunt. Head on out to the nearest lake or river. Grab some snacks and drinks and take some time to rock hunt. Bring a bucket to put your rocks in. Once you have found the rocks that you like, set up some paints on some newspaper. Put newspaper under the rock and begin. Use the features of the rock in your painting. Use the color, bumps and other features of the rock to your best advantage. A great idea is to make a paperweight. Find a smooth heavy rock that is about twice the size of your palm. Paint it however you like. You can paint it all one color, striped or even paint a picture on it. You can even make a gift for someone special with your rock. Write a message on it. For example, world’s greatest mother, best friend or I love you.

Leaf Prints Art: First, head out the door and go on a leaf hunt. Look for a bunch of different leaves. Collect small, large, smooth and rough ones. Once you have collected several different leaves, set up your work area. Spread out newspaper and set your paints up. Paint the back of a leaf with one color, then flip it over and press it onto a piece of construction paper. Make a collage of different leaves with different colors. If you want to reuse one leaf with a different color paint, just let the first color dry. Then start over. Add grasses, interesting branches and even flowers to your print. Another great idea is to grab some construction paper. Cut out the base of a tree. Glue the base of the tree to a poster board. Then add your leaves to the tree by gluing them on.
