Wooden Ring Bearer Box

What You’ll Need:
Two-section, shallow, wooden box
Fabric scraps
Foam or felt
Ribbon scraps
Paint Marker

Many people are opting out of having the ring bearer – usually a young boy – carry a satin pillow down the aisle. Sure, the rings look lovely on such a pillow but a satin pillow is very feminine, and it can also cause problems. More than one boy has dropped the slick pillow as he tries to balance it while walking. So, if you’re thinking of something different, something more unique, why not trade that frilly pillow for a box? The box might sound utilitarian but, when you finish with it, it will be a nice way to carry the rings, and a keepsake that takes up less room than a pillow.

The Box: Instead of trying to protect that satin pillow for decades – since it will be a cherished keepsake from the wedding – a box will give you less trouble. A wooden box is not hard to find; you’ll locate an assortment of them at a craft store, or at any number of online stores. The perfect box is one that is sectioned into two compartments. You’ll have one section for “his” and one for “hers”. The ring set will look lovely when you quickly improve the look of the box.

Painting and Monogram: A wooden box can be painted, stained, or left as it is. You can mount a wrought iron letter on it, attach a sticker monogram, or just write a letter with a paint marker. Another choice is to purchase small, flat letters – made of wood – at a craft store. They can be painted to match the box or they can stand out with a pop of a different color.

The Lining: Inside the box, a satin or other lining will look spectacular. Measure one of the small compartments and quickly sew a tiny pillow for it. Cut two pieces of fabric to be the size of the compartment. Cut a piece of thin foam or felt as the stuffing for the flat pillow. On the right side of one of the fabric pieces, tack two ribbon pieces, so that the ring can be tied on. With the ribbons in place, stack the two fabric pieces together – so that their right sides face each other – and lay the felt or foam on top. Sew almost all the way around the pillow but leave a small opening for turning it. After turning it right-side-out, sew the opening shut. Make a pillow for each section of the box.

Make a second set of pillows, and glue them to the inside of the lid, or just cut fabric and glue it in place. With a paint marker, write “His” and “Hers” on the fabric, so that the words coincide with the rings. When the ring bearer opens the box it will be a touching and beautiful moment.
