In Abilene, Texas there are great opportunities approaching to celebrate Women’s History Month. There are two specific activities that you do not want to miss. McMurry University featured women’s art exhibit and also, a free presentation from the 12th Armored Division Memorial Museum. Both promise to be family friendly, educational, and fun!
McMurry University is the site to visit for Women’s History Month. Dr. Christina Wilson, the dean of the School of Arts & Letters at McMurry has conglomerated with women of various ages and occupations to participate in an art show to celebrate women. Who women are currently, how we have evolved throughout history to our current place in society. The participants were provided with a 6″X 6″ blank canvas and two prompt statements. The prompts asked about “their perspective on being a woman and their perspective on the women around them.” Pretty deep questions to design their art around, yet over 100 women have stepped up to the challenge.
Dr. Wilson’s goal was “100 prominent female figures, 100 words” to explain their art. There will be art and perspectives from females in every walk of life. From middle school student, all the way to government officials. Women from all over West Texas are featured and connected through this exhibit. This display will be shown in the Amy Graves Ryan Fine Arts Building located at McMurry University from March 5th-March 31st, 2012, with a reception ceremony scheduled on March 20th, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. At 7:00 p.m., a discussion forum will begin featuring five women from the exhibit.
Admission to the art exhibit is free and the Amy Graves Ryan Fine Arts Building located on the corner of Sayles Blvd. and Hunt St. is open Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking is available across the street from the Amy Graves Ryan Fine Arts building at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. There will also be brown bag lunch presentations in the foyer of the Amy Graves Ryan Fine Arts Building at 12:00 p.m. on March 6th, 23rd, and March 27th, these are free and open to the public. If you happen to miss the exhibit, you may contact McMurry University and specifically, the School of Arts and Letters, for a book that will be compiled from the displays and participant statements.
Another venue that will be celebrating Women’s History Month will be the 12th Armored Division Memorial Museum located at 1289 N. 2nd in downtown Abilene. During Artwalk, on March 8th, 2012, which is held the 2nd Thursday of each month, the museum will celebrate women from the World War II era. They will feature women who served in World War II and also, women who kept the home fires burning back in the United States. This museum has living history volunteers that dress in clothes suited to the period and act out their parts true to character. Rosie the Riveter” will be dressed in her finest work attire.
