Why is My Garage Door Opener Not Working?

Automatic garage door openers have become part of most homes today. They allow homeowners convenience and safety. They come in different sizes, quality and now designs. However, when they don’t work, it can be for multiple reasons. Here are a list of the most common garage door problems.

Broken Spring: Springs are a important mechanism that allow the garage door to open. When the door is working right, these springs support most of the weight of the door. When the spring breaks, the door is no longer supported and cannot move. If when you are trying to use your door, it open only about 3 feet or less, it means a spring is the problem. Unfortunately, this is not something a inexperienced homeowner should try to fix. It requires a professional.

Opener Not Working: If when you press the button to open and nothing happens, check to make sure you have power. Openers are plugged into everyday electric sockets that may have a power issue. Try unplugging it and plugging in a small appliance. If there is still no power, check the circuit breakers in the panel in your home.

Jammed: Sometimes the lock or locking bar may get jammed shut. If you try to open the door and it only moves a few inches this may be the problem. Before considering calling a professional, check to make sure the door is unlocked and both the lock bars are free.

Sensor: This sensor is what detects when a person or object in in the way of the door. This sensor is called a photocell. If the connection between the sensors are not working the door will automatically stop closing to prevent any injuries. A malfunctioning sensor could be the reason the door is not working.

Broken Rollers: Rollers are what you see mounted to the sides of the garage door, that allow it to slide down into closed or move into open position. Like anything else built, over time, with constant use, the roller may need maintenance. This may require lubrication periodically to make this work. If the rollers are broken, they may need to be replaced.

Frayed Cables: Frayed cables are very dangerous and a problem when the break occurs. They may snap and cause injury if someone is in the garage when it happens. When this cable goes, it will cause the garage door to stay closed. Meaning if your car is inside, there will be no way to get it out. Frayed cables can be fixed with a professional. Periodically, check your garage opener for this problem.

Garage doors openers are a important part of our everyday routine that we take for granted. When it is working, we don’t even think about. But, when it breaks, we realize how much we need it. When yours breaks, check to see if you are able to fix the problem yourself, however, don’t take on more you can handle. If not fixed properly, the situation can go from bad to worse or even dangerous. If you believe the problem too difficult, then make right decision and hire a professional. Make sure the person or company you hire is licensed and insured.
