Whole Fruit Sorbets: Consumer Product Review

Ever since I was a child, I have been a big fan of frozen desserts. Ice cream, in all of its flavors and manifestations and sherbet are treats that I enjoy eating regularly. Another frozen concoction that I also very much enjoy eating is sorbet. Sorbet is a frozen water- based treat that is somewhat similar to sherbet, but much lighter in consistency and calories. One of the most well known and largest selling brands of sorbet is the Whole Fruit (R) line of sorbets, which is distributed by Dreyer’s (R) Inc. In 2006, Dreyer’s (R) became part of the Nestle’ (R) family of food products.

Although there are many brands of sorbet sold in the United States, the Whole Fruit (R) line of sorbet products is by far one of the most flavorful and high- quality brands of sorbet available in American supermarkets. With at least six flavors of sorbet available, Whole Fruit (R) Sorbet offers more flavor choices than most other sorbet manufacturers. These sorbet products, which are labeled as “Super Premium” sorbets are chock- full of real fruit flavor that is derived from its use of real fruit puree, real fruit juice from concentrate and natural flavors. The six flavors of sorbet offered by Whole Fruit (R) are Coconut, Lemon, Mango, Raspberry, Strawberry and Tropical. Each of these flavored sorbets offers a fresh and dynamic fruit taste that is always light and refreshing and easy to digest. While ice cream and sherbet are indeed cool and refreshing desserts that are regularly enjoyed by many people, sometimes, particularly in very hot and humid weather, or after consuming a very heavy meal, they are too rich and creamy to consume. Enter Whole Fruit (R) Sorbet. Because sorbet is a water- based treat similar to an Italian Ice, it is often more appealing and desirable to the palate. In fact, sorbet has been used for many years in upscale restaurants, as a “palate cleanser” between courses of multi- course meals, allowing the diner to approach each subsequent course, such as a soup, salad or entree with a clean and refreshed mouth and appetite.

Unlike some other brands of sorbet, Whole Fruit (R) Sorbet does not contain an overly- sweet or sour aftertaste or grainy consistency. While sorbet in general tends to be enjoyed more by adults than children, perhaps because of its somewhat sophisticated image, Whole Fruit (R) Sorbet is a frozen taste treat that is every bit as appealing and appropriate for children, as it is for adults. When a person is feeling “under the weather”, or sick with a malady such as a sore throat, stomach ache or cold, Whole Fruit (R) Sorbet is a frozen food product that can easily be consumed. Whole Fruit (R) Sorbet can also be used in conjunction with other food items, to create very delectable dishes. When combined with slices of fresh fruit, or served with pound cake, Whole Fruit (R) Sorbet adds another lively dimension to the afore- mentioned items. These delightful sorbet items can be utilized in the preparation of frosty drinks such as smoothies and various adult beverages and add a cool spark and pizazz to items such as spinach salad and chicken salad. The various uses for Whole Fruit (R) Sorbet are limited only by the consumer’s imagination. These high- quality sorbet products generally contain 130- 140 calories, with 0 calories from fat, per 1/2 cup serving. They are also dairy- free, fat- free, gluten- free, nut- allergen free and are Kosher. All things considered, Whole Fruit (R) Sorbets are delicious, reasonably priced frozen dessert items that are highly recommended by this food writer.
