Where to Visit, Eat and Stay in Albuquerque New Mexico

Planning a trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico? Well let me help you out. Here are some of the best attractions to see, restaurants to eat at and hotels to stay in.

Attractions

Sandia Peak Tramway

The Sandia Peak Tramway is the world’s largest aerial tramway with a distance of 2.7 miles. Enjoy an 11,000 square mile panoramic view of the Land of Enchantment from the observation deck more than10,000 feet up the Sandia Peak.

The tramcars can carry up to 50 people and ascend 4,000 feet in fifteen minutes, along the western side of the Sandia Mountain. Many different birds and animals live among the various pines, oaks, firs and other vegetation on the mountain. During any time of the day, passengers can see the Rio Grande, a volcano field, Mount Taylor (more than 100 miles away), Cabazon, Redondo Peak in the Jemez Mountains and Valley Grande, a volcano crater that is said to be the largest in the world.

The tramway also offers skiing and ski lessons in the winter and char lift rides and mountain biking in the summer. Dine at Sandiago’s Mexican Grill at the base of the Sandia Peak Tram or at High Finance Restaurant & Tavern at the top of the peak.

Individual tramway tickets cost between $10.00 and $17.50 depending on if it is for a child, adult or person over the age of 62. Children under the age of five get free admission. Weekend specials are available as well as season tickets. (505) 856-7325.

Cliffs Amusement Park

Cliffs Amusement Park is open April thru September and is one of the top three must visit places in Albuquerque. This park offers fun for the young and the old, the brave and the less brave. Dare to go on one of the thrill rides including the Sidewinder, Musik Express, Sea Dragon and the Falling Star.

Do not forget the New Mexico Rattler, one of the top 25 wooded roller coasters in the world, as well as the only super coaster in New Mexico. Thrill rides just a little too much for you? Don’t worry there are family rides including the Tilt-A-Whirl, the Scrambler, Rock-O-Plane and the Galaxi, New Mexico’s first ever roller coaster.

Cool off from the hot New Mexico sun on a water ride. There is the Big Flush Water Coaster and the Rocky Mountain Rapids. Also, visit Water monkey’s adventure, a water play area with swings, wading pool, water games and more. For the little ones, there is Kidddieland. To kids, Kiddieland is the place to be. Kids can enjoy Kiddie Bumper Cars, The Frog Hopper, Baja Buggy, Doggie-Go-Round, The Balloon Wheel and of course the Carousel.

General admission is as low as $2.50 and ride tickets are 42.00 each. Ride passes that include general admission, Water monkey’s Adventure and unlimited rides are also available, as well as group rates and birthday parties.

Rio Grande Zoo

The Rio Grande Zoo has more than 250 exotic and native animal species. This 64-acre zoo is home to hippos, seals, koalas, jaguars, zebras, elephants and so much more. Each of the exhibits are all state of the art with naturalistic habitats with rocks, water areas, grass and trees.

The African exhibit has within it 17 individual exhibits and 23 species of birds and mammals. These different species include the Red River Hogs, Cape Griffon Vultures, Spotted Hyenas, Wattled Cranes, lady Ross’s Turacos and others.

Other exhibits available at the zoo are gator Swamp Top (home to 25 juvenile American Alligators), Naked Mole Rat Top, Thunderbird Express Top ( a ¾ scale train that moves in a loop around the zoo) and the Tropical American Top which features toucans, tarantulas, Spider monkeys, Orchids and colorful Bromeliads.

Enjoy a meal at the Cottonwood Café, The Matunda Café or the Phoenix Plaza snack bar. Zoo gift and souvenir shops include the Critter outfitter (located just inside the zoo entrance) and the Out of Africa gift shop in the African Exhibit.

New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science

With so much to see and experience, the New Mexico Museum of natural History and Science will leave you in wonder and awe.

Time tracks are the museums permanent exhibit halls. These eight exhibits include Origins/Paleozoic (12 billion to 250 millions years ago), Dawn of the Dinosaurs (251-202 million years ago), Jurassic Super giants (202-144 million years ago), New Mexico’s Seacoast (144-66 million years ago), Age of Volcanoes’, Evolving grasslands (66-1.6 million years ago0, the Cave experience and New Mexico’s Ice Age (1.6 million to 10,000 years ago).

Other exhibits include Albuquerque and the Personal Computer revolution, Mars Exploration Rover Return, Naturalist Center, Fossil Works and entrance Dinos Naturescape 208 is a changing exhibit. This year’s theme is Wild, Wacky Weather: Precipitation and Drought in New Mexico.

Do not forget to check out the Dynotheater and take in a show. See Dinosaurs alive in computer generated animation or The Living Sea and enjoy the oceans beauty and life. Planetarium shows include Enchanted Skies: The Digital Universe, Night of the Titanic and It’s About Time.

Admission prices for the museum exhibits, Dynotheater and Planetarium are between $4 and $7 dollars depending on age.

Restaurants

Frontier Restaurant

Enjoy a breakfast of eggs, hash browns, toast or tortillas, or a Western Omelet made with three eggs, cheddar cheese and green chili. It is also served with tomato, hash browns and either toast or flour tortilla. For lunch have a flame burger in hickory smoke sauce, lettuce and onion, or a double meat Bonanza burger with American cheese, pickle, tomato, lettuce, onion and Thousand Island dressing. Sandwiches include the BLT, grilled cheese, broiled chicken and fiesta chicken.

For dinner, have a 6 ounce ground round top chop steak or top sirloin steak with hash brown or fries and Texas toast with salad. For a salad, enjoy a chef salad or vegetarian salad. New Mexican food includes the Carne Adovada Burrito, Enchiladas, Frontier burrito, Posole or Green chili stew and taco Salad to name a few. Side orders and items in bulk are also available.

Flying Star Café

Having won many awards for the food, accommodations and friendliness, the Flying Star Café is a wonderful place to dine.

Enjoy the award winning Fabulous French Toast or blueberry Buttermilk Pancakes. Choose from eight different salads including the Mediterranean Nosh made with olives, cucumbers, hummus, tomato wedges, olive oil and basil, or the Waldorf made with dilled chicken salad, walnuts, grapes, Tomatilla Lime Vinaigrette and fresh orange.

For lunch have a sandwich such as tuna, star BLT, egg salad or the Ranchers. Burgers include the grilled chicken breast, ABC patty melt, NM burger and others. Blue plate platters include NM enchiladas with red or green chili, fish and chips, Pasta Pomodoro and the Buddha’s Bowl to list a few. Depending on the day, there are delicious specials to choose from.

Eggs used at the Flying Star are veg. fed, cage free and drug free. All dressing is made in the kitchen from scratch and the beef is 100% beef and drug free, as well as the chicken.

Saggios

Saggios is a unique family owned pizza place. With large pillars, creative murals, decorating, and plenty of seating, Saggios has an inviting and friendly atmosphere. A Mercedes inside the restaurant serves as a soda fountain and side bar.

Choose from plenty of pasta plates, many types of gourmet pizza such as pepperoni or vegetarian pizzas. Sandwiches and salads are also available as well as desserts.

Open Sunday thru Thursday from 11am to 10pm and Friday and Saturdays from 11am to 11pm. For delicious pizza and a fun place to dine, Saggios is the place.

La Crepe Michel

La Crepe Michel is a French, continental restaurant. For lunch, there is Ouide Lorraine, omelet’s and Pissaladiere entrees. Sandwiches include Croque Monsieur, Croque Madame, Filet de Boeuf and Jamban et Brie. Enjoy savory crepes such as Volaille or Crepe aux Epinards, to name a few. There are also soups salads and appetizers.

The dinner menu consists of featured entrées that are different nightly. Hours d’ Oeuvres include Soup a l’ Oignon, Les Escargots, Brie en Croute, Salade Maison and Salade Nicoise, among others. Enjoy many different dessert and drinks or choose from their extensive wine list. Catering is also available for special events.

Casas de Suenos

Casas de Suenos, “Old Town Country Inn” was built in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Casas de Suenos offers 21 casitas, suited for either two, four or six guests.

There is the Manzano Superior, a one-bedroom suite, the Rio Grande a deluxe one-bedroom suite. The two bedroom suites include the Pinon, Sandia and the La Mirandor. The Porter is a one-bedroom suite, Kadnina is a deluxe one bedroom, and the Taos or Zuni suites are deluxe studios.

The standard one bedroom king suite is the La Cascado or O’Keefe, the Rose is a standard room and the Secret garden is a deluxe one bedroom. Deluxe one-bedroom suites include the Suenos, El prado, Turquoise, Faralito and RT66.

Each room comes with T.V., either king or queen beds, tub and shower and either a kitchenette or a fully stocked kitchen

Sandia Resort and Casino

The Sandia Resort and Casino has it all. It is a hotel, casino, has a spa, gold course, restaurants and entertainment. Each of the 228 guest’s rooms are spacious and decorated in a southwest style. Adobe Nido Bed and Breakfast

Built in 1985 the Adobe Nido is designed to look like the old style southwest. Construction included kiva fireplaces, exposed beams, raised vegetable beds and herb gardens, as well as a fishpond with waterfall and so much more.

Rooms include the Burrowing Owl Nest, Wood Duck Nest and Suite for a Flock. Accommodations include private baths, outdoor Finnish sauna, broadband wireless internet, satellite TV. and HBO and a healthy breakfast every morning. Rates are between $109 and $234 dollars per night.

Staybridge suites have 44 single bedded rooms and 46 double-bedded rooms along with 90 suites. Hotel amenities include a 24-hour fitness center, indoor pool, BBQ grills, recreation and sports court, house keeping and laundry services. Business services are also available as well as a gift shop and convenience store.
