Where to Stay in Nice, France

Nice, France, is a beautiful city along the Mediterranean coast right in the middle of the magical French Riviera. I’ve visited the city many times, usually just using the airport as my entrance point to other destinations in the south of France. During a recent trip, I finally had some time to spend in this beautiful city.

Nice is big enough to have its own international airport, yet retains a small town feel without the sprawl and huge development of some other Riviera towns. The location of Nice is also ideal to quick and easy connections to other French cities along the coast, like Cannes and St. Tropez, as well as further on to Monaco and Monte Carlo. A convenient train line connects all the cities along the coast, with fast, frequent train service.

In Nice, low season is January-March; medium season is the months of April and October, as well as Christmas and New Year’s. High season is the summer, from May through September. Most hotels have three pricing levels based on this breakdown. Rates are much higher during Carnival and major festivals and events.

Here are my recommendations for hotels in Nice, France:

Luxury – Hotel Negresco

One of the grand hotels, designed as ornately as palaces to please the real royalty that used to spend time here, my favorite is the Hotel Negresco. The hotel opened in 1913 with a glass dome designed by Gustave Eiffel of Eiffel Tower fame. Catering to royalty, the Negresco has been renovated and modernized and delivers a true European five-star experience. This does not come cheap; rooms start at around $500 during the off season.

Hip and Stylish – Hotel Beau Rivage

This hotel is also on the beach and, although originally built in 1860, it’s sleek, hip, and modern. Rooms start at $330 off-season and $500 per night in high season. The terrace suites overlooking the ocean are $985 per night in high season. The hotel has a private beach, and for $25, you get a towel, umbrella, and sunbed for the day.

Cheap – Hotel Azur Riviera

The Azur Riviera is cheap, close to the train station, and clean. The rates are $64 per night in low season and $116 per night in high season, a true bargain in this expensive city and country. This is a good option for travelers who want to use Nice as a base but not spend a lot of time at the hotel.
