Wedding Cake Charms

Whether you love tradition, or you just love giving away small gifts to your best friends, you’ll adore a cute craft where you make cake charms for the bridesmaids. The charms are hidden in the cake and the bridesmaids take turns, pulling one out at a time, until each bridesmaid – and maid of honor – has one. The old tradition dates way back but you don’t have to hold to tradition just to offer cake charms to your friends. The charms are a nice way of thanking the bridesmaids for all their help during the wedding preparations.

It’s up to you if the charms will be inexpensive trinkets from a craft store’s jewelry-making department or costly charms from a jewelry store. That’s the great thing about this craft; it fits in with anyone’s budget. Consider the meaning of the charms you purchase. Choose a heart to give a wish of love, a dollar sign to offer a wish of wealth or even a four leaf clover to wish luck to one of your bridesmaids. Others suggestions include an anchor for stability, a star for a granted wish, or even a musical note to represent a life of harmony.

Purchase charms which feature a tiny hole at the top for attaching a small ring which hooks onto a charm bracelet. Most jewelry store or craft store charms feature the opening. However, there are some other things you can use which aren’t exactly charms, like a fake wedding band from a craft store. For all regular charms, cut a piece of satin ribbon, slide one end through the opening of the charm, and tie the ends together. For a ring, just slip the ribbon through it.

After all the charms are attached to ribbons you’ll then set about placing them in the cake. If you’re having a bridesmaid party the charms can be hidden in the cake you’re serving. One way to do that is to make a bundt cake. Place the charms in the middle of the cake with their ribbons coming out and over the cake. Arrange flowers over the circle so no one can see the charms. Have the bridesmaids each pull one ribbon to receive their charm.

Even if you don’t make a bundt cake you can still hide the charms without getting them covered with frosting. After icing the cake, lay the charms on top, with their ribbons hanging over the sides of the cake. Arrange flowers on top of the cake – and over the charms – to conceal them.

Some people don’t actually hide the charms. Instead, the knot of the ribbon ends is set under the cake and the charms are displayed on the table, around the cake. There are many options for hiding or offering the charms to the bridesmaids.

The maid of honor and bridesmaids are generally the bride’s best friends. When you give them each a charm you’re giving a gift to a good friend while also giving each of them a memento from the wedding.
