Top Fashion Books to Read This Summer

Here are my top fashion books that have debuted within the past year that I recommend for this summer. With spring and fall as bookends, summer is arriving. It’s easy for us to find reasons to be outside and bask in the warm sunshine. One good reason? Fashionable summer reading to update yourself on the things that inspire you.

Read these top fashion books and look hot while doing so (with sunscreen of course)!

1. Fashion Design Course by Steven Faerm: From the aspiring fashion designer to the fashion inspired, this book shows one how to develop one’s own portfolio for a designer collection. Faerm, who has worked for designers such as Marc Jacobs and Donna Karan, details this book with recommendations from fashion industry professionals, the lowdown on fabrics and trends, and practical tutorials to sharpen your expertise in fashion design. [Publisher: Barron’s Educational Services Inc.]

2. The Little Guide to Vintage Shopping by Melody Fortier: Who doesn’t like discovering a clothing treasure at an unbelievable and affordable price? For the vintage clothing enthusiast, this book offers almost a couple hundred pages of guides and visuals to vintage boutiques, the breakdown by decade of vintage couture, and hints to get the most out of your pocketbook for those rare and lovely finds. [Publisher: Quirk Books]

3. WhoWhatWear by Hilary Kerr and Katherine Power: Known for their blog featuring runway and celebrity style insight, the pair demonstrates how what you see on the red carpet and the catwalks can be translated into your closet. With illustrative tips and resourceful references, WhoWhatWear is a girl’s best friend when it comes to high fashion. [Publisher: Abrams Image]

4. You Know You Want It by Eric Daman: So at least almost every girl enamored with fashion has seen or heard of the television series, “Gossip Girl.” And at least most of these girls in that assortment drool over the outfits featured in the show. The stylist for the show, Eric Daman, had his own book debut at the end of last year. It includes his recommendations and personal thoughts regarding style. It’s a bookshelf staple for any girl that xoxo’s with New York’s Upper East Side. [Publisher: Clarkson Potter]

5. Dreaming of Dior by Charlotte Smith: With hundreds of drawings of dresses from the Darnell collection, each dress is featured with its own story spanning the time period from 1790 to the early 1990’s. Get ready to be lost in an exquisite world of designer and vintage dresses that curator Charlotte Smith inherited from her godmother, Doris Darnell. [Publisher: Atria Books]

6. The Sartorialist by Scot Schuman: For those who are more fascinated by pictures than words, this is a book that captures the ingenious photography and fashion eye of Scot Schuman, most famous for his blog titled identically to his book. The moments in life photographed in this book and Schuman’s commentary paired with them are timeless. [Publisher: Penguin Books USA]
