Top 5 Songs that Rocked the Billboard Hot 100 Charts for 14 Weeks

Friday, August 3, 2012 marks the anniversary of the day that Los Del Rio’s 1996 song, “Macarena”, hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 pop charts in America. The song ultimately spent a whopping 60 weeks on the Hot 100 list, 14 of which were spent in the number one position. In honor of the song’s anniversary, I thought that I would take a look at five other songs that managed to stay at the top of the charts that long. Here they are:

“I Will Always Love You”

The late Whitney Houston’s 1992 hit, “I will Always Love You”, spent 14 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It was one of 11 songs sung by Houston that made it to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts over the course of her career. It also happens to be one of my favorite Houston songs. She sang it with such emotion that it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up every time it played on the radio.

“I’ll Make Love to You”

Boyz II Men’s 1994 hit, “I’ll Make Love to You”, spent 14 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It wasn’t their first song to achieve great success and it most certainly wasn’t their last. Another Boyz II Men song that spent a great deal of time on the Billboard Hot 100 charts was, “End of the Road.” Ironically, the song spent 13 weeks at the top of the charts in 1992 until it was replaced by Whitney Houston’s song, “I Will Always Love You.

“Candle in the Wind 1997”

Elton John’s 1997 hit, “Candle in the Wind 1997”, spent 14 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Part of what made the song memorable for me was that it was played at Princess Diana’s funeral. I found it incredibly moving at the time and to this day, I still associate the song with her death.

“We Belong Together”

Mariah Carey’s 2005 hit, “We Belong Together”, spent 14 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It is just one of many hits that the darling diva has belted out over the years. As a matter of fact, in March 2012, she was recognized by Billboard as having almost as many top 100 hits as the Beatles. Although that is impressive, for me, the most outstanding thing about Carey’s singing is the way that she hits those high notes.

“I Gotta Feeling”

The Black Eyed Peas’ 2009 hit, “I Gotta Feeling”, spent 14 weeks at the top of the Billboard Top 100 charts. As infectious as the song is, it isn’t my favorite Black Eyed Peas song. Personally, I like their 2010 hit, “Rock that Body.” Other Black Eyed Peas songs of note include, “Boom, Boom, Pow”, “Imma Be” and “My Humps.

Killeen Gonzalez enjoys listening to music with her family. She is also a former special events planner.
