Tips for Raccoon and Opossum Hunting

Coon and Opossum hunting is an engaging and interesting activity. Many times it is done by what is known as a dry run. A dry run is without the intent to kill but, rather to stalk or hunt. Many dry runs are used to train dogs. Still there are hunting seasons that are set up State Wildlife and Game Reserves to help control the population of these two animals. States will differ in their hunting seasons. Each State has strict rules and regulations for hunting.

Coon and Opossum hunting is usually a nighttime experience. This is because these two animals are nocturnal creatures. Both animals have habits and skills that are challenging to a hunter. They are good climbers, excellent swimmers, and are very agile creatures. These traits make it very challenging for the hunter.

When you go on a hunt, it is advised to have a good hunting dog. Dogs will go out a head of the hunter(s) and try to pick up a scent. They will then chase and tree the animal for the hunter. They will stay at the base of the tree barking until the hunter(s) arrive. The second and maybe even most important piece of equipment that a hunter needs is a good flashlight. Once the animal is treed, the hunter needs a light to locate the animal in the tree. Even with a good light, they can be hard to locate.

On a dry run, the hunter(s) at this point will reward the dog with a treat and verbal praise. They will then leash the dog and move on. Many times, hunter(s) will run several inexperienced dogs with a well trained dog. This is a way of training the other dogs. Many times, this is the main purpose of a dry run.

On a regular hunt a weapon is carried. This can be anything from a bow to a shotgun or rifle. The weapon is used to kill and bring down the game. The dogs will then assist in retrieval of the game. This is part of the dogs training as well. It is the climax of the hunt and the dog is rewarded by smelling the game up close.

As you become a more experienced hunter, you will be able to determine the sex of the animals that you hunt. Why is this important? The thing that you want to try to avoid is killing a mother that has babies that depend on her. Most States know the best time to avoid this situation and that is how they establish their hunting season. Still from time to time, you could run across a mother.

If you hunt at night, there are several things to observe. First, never on hunt on property without permission. Always hunt away from homes and roads and populated areas. Keep clear of livestock. Hunting at night means additional safety measures. Make sure that those with you are close by. Never shoot blindly at an animal. Know where your hunting party members are located. If you go over an obstacle or through a fence, have your partner hold your weapon till you have cleared the obstacle. If you are hunting as a group, you only need one weapon. The less weapons you have with your group the safer you will be. Carry a cell phone in case of an emergency. Know the terrain that you will be crossing. Know your location. It is very easy to get lost in the woods at night. Finding visual reference points are next to impossible in the dark. Dress for the environment and weather. Always carry some water with you.

When you are finished hunting for the evening, secure your dogs with leashes. Some dogs will want to continue to wander after you are finished.
