Timberwolf Organics Dog Food Versus Purina Beneful Dog Food

Like most pet owners, with the recent rash of pet food recalls I became concerned about the food I was giving to my dogs. Because, I wanted to make sure Fido was getting a healthy diet, I began to research brands of organic dog food and compared them to the Purina Beneful I was feeding him.

Based on the advice of my veterinarian, I learned in comparing dog foods, one of the first things you should look at is the first three ingredients listed on the package. In an ideal food, at least two of these ingredients should come from a meat source. Dogs are by nature carnivores and need protein. Well, the first three ingredients in Purina Beneful were: ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal and corn gluten meal. Hmmmm …. Not good. In comparison, the first three ingredients in Timberwolf Organics dog food were: chicken meal, chicken and whole oats. This was a much better combination for my canine companion.

Next, I compared artificial colors and dyes. According to my vet, both of these can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive animals. Timberwolf Organics listed no artificial dyes or colors. Purina Beneful listed Yellow 5, Red 40, Yellow 6 and Blue 2.

Probiotics are dietary supplements which help aid the dog’s digestive and immune systems. According to my vet, they help dogs deal with stress and process toxins as well. In my research, I was surprised to learn Purina Beneful had no probiotics in its food and Timberwolf Organics did. However, both Purina Beneful and Timberwolf Organics contained antioxidants and vegetables which help dogs get the vitamins and minerals they need for good health. Only Timberwolf Organics contained chelated minerals. Chelated minerals are minerals which are “attached” to prevent them from coming apart in the digestive system. My vet explained to me, some people believe chelated minerals are absorbed and processed better by the animal’s body.

As I continued my research, I learned Timberwolf Organics would cost me approximately $.70/day to feed my dog. (This would include the cost of having the food shipped to my house.) In comparison, Purina Beneful would cost $.67/day (including the costs involved in getting it home) to feed my dog. After showing the information on Timberwolf Organics to my vet, I decided it was worth $.03 more per day to improve my dog’s diet.

After gradually introducing Timberwolf Organics into my dog’s diet, I have had him solely eating Timberwolf Organics Southwest Chicken and Herbs™ Formula (Dry Kibble) for about three weeks. At first I did not notice much of a change, but recently, my 13 year old canine friend has shown more energy and playfulness. He has had fewer stomach problems and my vet commented that his coat has been looking much better! Fido’s muscle tone has improved and while he still is a bit chubby, he has lost two pounds by switching over.

As far as customer service, I cannot say enough great things about Timberwolf Organics. They have a great selection of products including: Wild & Natural Dry Formula™ (Dry Kibble) ; Wilderness Elk Formula™ (Dry Kibble) ; Dakota Bison Formula™ (Dry Kibble) ; Ocean Blue Formula™ (Dry Kibble) ; Black Forest Venison & Herbs Formula™ (Dry Kibble); Nutrient Dense Lamb With Apples Formula™ (Dry Kibble) and Southwest Chicken & Herbs Formula (Dry Kibble). Plus the company has a great assortment of doggie treats as well. The staff at Timberwolf Organics has been very responsive to my questions and did not hesitate to suggest I talk with vet before making my final decision. Their products ship promptly and everything has arrived in excellent condition.

So, overall, I am very pleased I switched from Purina Beneful to Timberwolf Organics. While it may cost a little more in the short term, I am happy knowing my dog is receiving a healthy diet. It is a great feeling seeing looking better and acting younger. If you have an interest in trying Timberwolf Organics with your dog, I would suggest visiting their website. After reading their information, I would print it out and take it in to your veterinarian for their opinion as well.

Bon appetite to your canine companion!
