Stenciling Fabric

The only tools required are fabric paints, pre-cut stencils, applicators and the item that you want to decorate. A stencil can be very simple or very intricate. If you are a beginner do not start with a complicated design.

It is easiest to start out stenciling on flat fabric but as you gain knowledge you will soon be able to stencil garments by taping the stencil to it. Plain cotton and cotton/polyester blends are the easiest fabrics to work on. Fabrics such as velvets and some woven fabrics are also fun to experiment with. Work with different paints, fabrics and applicators to achieve a whole range of fantastic creations.

Paints
At the arts and crafts supply store you will find paints designed specifically for use on fabrics. There are flat fabric paints which can be labeled opaque, clear, metallic or neon with a wide assortment of colors to choose from. There are also dimensional paints in which an iron is applied to the painted surface and then the paint puffs up to create a dimensional form.

Almost all fabric paints require a permanent fixative after applying. Read the directions on the packaging and follow completely for best results.

Fabric paint may be packaged in different ways. For most stenciling projects paint that is sold in jars or bottles are the best option. The paint is then poured onto a plate or similar item so that you can use your applicator. You can also find paints in tubes or pens which are handy for outlining edges of your stencil.

Applicators
Although brushes are the most common choice you can use just about anything you find works on walls will also work for fabric painting. Stencil paint brushes look like a shaving brush. They have short, flat bristles. Purchase good quality brushes.

Small foam rollers are ideal for small projects and are ideal for beginners. Sponges add texture to a stenciled project and are very easy to use. Regular kitchen sponges cut into small squares are the best choice economically.

Stencils
Stencils can be found at sewing and craft stores already pre-cut and ready to use.

Stenciling Tips
Prewash the fabric to shrink and remove any manufacturer’s chemical traces. Iron out all wrinkles. Tape or staple the ironed fabric to a flat surface then tape the stencil onto the fabric with masking tape or temporary spray adhesive. Position a piece of plastic-wrapped cardboard between the layers to prevent paint seepage. Protect your work area with plastic or paper.

Pour a small amount of paint into an old plate, etc. Dip the tip of the brush into the paint, dab off excess paint onto a paper towel.

For a smooth appearance select a stiff brush. With the bristles held perpendicular to the surface push the paint into the fabric fibers using a circular rubbing strokes. For a more textured look, dab the paint in place. Always begin at the outer edge to outline the shape and work inward.

To use a sponge dip the sponge in water. Squeeze out excess and then dip the sponge in paint. Use a light dabbing motion when painting.

Use a little paint at a time. Make sure paint does not seep under the stencil. Work with one color at a time. Wait until the first color dries before beginning the second. Some designs require more than one stencil. Make sure that they are perfectly lined up or your design will look out of place.

Stenciling can be a very economical way to update your wardrobe and home furnishings. Practice and experiment for best results.
