Silk Plain Soy Milk: Food Review

After becoming a vegan I decided to give up dairy which included milk, which I enjoyed. I enjoyed milk because of cereal. I was a huge cereal fan. One of the first non dairy milks that I tried since becoming a vegan was Rice Dream (rice based milk). I was very disappointed with Rice Dream. It was very hard for me to drink or even eat with cereal. It was just so thin and plain, almost water like. It was not until Silk soy milk hit the market, or rather when I discovered it in the year 2000, that I began to see some light.

Silk Soy Milk is a non dairy soy based (made from soy beans) milk manufactured using as the soy milk site states, “clean renewable energy.” Silk soy milk comes in a variety of flavors including, plain, vanilla, very vanilla, and chocolate. In addition to flavors, soy milk includes a light, natural, unsweetened, heart health, bone health and fiber, refrigerated and shelf-stable variety…. The list of variety is long and so are the benefits.

I tried the Silk (plain) Soy Milk. The Plain Silk Soy Milk that I purchased came in a lively red colored gallon. The design of the carton was very easy on the eyes. It had an intriguing design; soymilk being perfectly poured into a healthy bowl of banana, strawberry and blueberry laden cereal. The design was one that made me gravitate towards it. It just screamed I look good and taste good. The side panels on the carton depicted informative facts about Soy Milk and its benefits.

Taste

The soymilk was very smooth just like silk, and gentle. It had a nice texture to it but was not as thick as dairy milk. The color was an off white-light tan color. The taste was very good; it tasted nothing like rice dream and nothing like dairy milk. It settled well in my stomach because it was so light and smooth.

In Cereal

I tried Silk Plain Soy Milk in cereal and it was delicious. Even though the soy milk was plain it had a nice creamy taste to it. The soymilk took on the sweetness of the cereal when used in cereal, and it tasted great!

In Tea

I didn’t really care for this soymilk with tea. When used, the soymilk added a bit of sweetness to the tea, this was just something that I was curious in trying and it was not that great. I also tried the soy milk in coffee and it was not bad, but it lightened my coffee up a great deal. I tend to like my coffee borderline black.

In Oatmeal

This is so great in oatmeal! I use Plain Silk Soymilk in oatmeal to keep it from being so stiff and stuck together. The soymilk loosened up the oatmeal a lot, it gave it a nice creamy-thick texture and sweet rich taste.

With Baking

This milk is also great with baking. I have used it in my cookie recipes and in macaroni and cheese and it seemed to enhance the flavor. In the macaroni the soymilk gives it an amazingly creamy texture and in the cookies the soy milk gave it a soft, sweet texture.

Benefits

Plain Silk Soymilk is good for the body because it lacks cholesterol, trans fats, is free of lactose, dairy, gluten, eggs, casein, peanuts, and MSG. It also has a good amount of calcium, vitamin D, and Omega 3’s. There is 7 grams of soy protein per serving. Silk Soy Milk is not only good for the body but for the Earth because it is manufactured using wind energy

I give Silk Plain Soy Milk a 5 out of a 5! It is great.

Price

Silk Plain Soy Milk costs $2-$4 and is usually found with the dairy milk in the grocery store.
