Signs and Symptoms of Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is caused by bacteria, and leads to damage to tooth enamel, which results in cavities. It can also result in tooth pain, infection, tooth loss, and in very severe cases, tooth decay can result in death. There are several signs you can look for in recognizing tooth decay. You can also effectively deal with and prevent tooth decay.

The first sign of tooth decay, according to Wikipedia, is a chalky white spot on the tooth. This white spot indicates that there is demineralization in the tooth enamel. While the spot remains white, tooth decay can be reversed.

Another sign of tooth decay is pain. As a cavity progresses, you may notice the affected tooth begin to hurt. Additionally, indicators of tooth decay include tooth sensitivity to hot and cold substances, the tooth may become soft when you touch it, and sensitive to the touch. White, gray, black, or brown spots on the teeth, bad breath, a bad taste in the mouth, a broken tooth, and loose fillings are also signs of tooth decay, according to Yahoo Health.

If you are suffering from tooth pain as a result of tooth decay, you need to visit a dentist in order to get the cavity filled. In the meantime, however, try avoiding hot, cold, or acidic food and drinks, breathing in cold air, and eating sweets. You can use ice to numb the hurting tooth and take over-the-counter painkillers to cope with the pain. Rinsing your mouth with a warm salt-water mixture can also help with tooth pain.

The best way to prevent and treat early tooth decay is good dental hygiene. It is important to brush your teeth two to three times each day. Additionally, flossing everyday will help you remove bacteria that leads to tooth decay. Brushing your teeth with toothpaste that contains fluoride will help make your tooth enamel strong. Today, most toothpaste on the market contains fluoride.

In addition to good daily oral hygiene, visiting your dentist regularly for cleanings and check-ups is essential for preventing tooth decay. It is recommended that you visit your dentist every six months for professional teeth cleaning and check-ups.

Avoid snacking often. If you eat sticky foods, brush your teeth afterwards. You can also ask your dentist about dental sealants, which is a plastic coating that protects your back teeth from tooth decay.

Tooth decay is caused by bacteria on the teeth, which can be effectively removed with good oral hygiene and regular dental care. However, when tooth decay builds up it can lead to tooth pain, infection, tooth loss, and in severe cases, death. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of tooth decay as well as knowing how to deal with it early will help you avoid cavities. If you are experiencing tooth pain from tooth decay, remember to visit your dentist as soon as possible to get it effectively treated.
