Side Effects and Benefits of Effexor XR

For the past eight months, I have taken Effexor XR on a daily basis. I was initially a bit hesitant to start taking this medication. Fortunately I have an excellent doctor who was willing to talk with me about the benefits and possible side effects. In the past, I have had poor luck with most SSRI type anti-depressants. Effexor is an SNRI, an antidepressant of the serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. While I have suffered some side effects, I have found this medication much more effective at treating my depression. I have experienced some side effects with Effexor XR.

Initially, I experienced some strong episodes of nervousness when I started taking Effexor. This feeling was fairly uncomfortable and would be quite distressing for anyone who suffers from anxiety or panic. The feelings subsided within about two weeks. I did experience some mild nausea. This can be avoided by taking the medication with food or plenty of water.

Effexor can raise blood pressure. My family has a history of high blood pressure, so it was something to watch out for. I have noticed a slight elevation of my blood pressure, but it has not progressed to anything serious or dangerous. I do think the raised blood pressure, combined with the dizzy spells, has given me a few low grade headaches. I’ve found these can be fixed by lying down, staying hydrated and practicing relaxing activities. I also had several dizzy spells. If I forget to take my medication, dizziness is a given symptom. From time to time, I experience some dizziness. it is usually brief, only a few moments. However it can occur several times a day. This is an intermittent symptom. I find it unsettling, but I have been told it is not serious.

Perhaps the most pronounced side effect has been the decrease in my sexual desire. I have a fairly strong sex drive. During the time I have taken Effexor, I have noticed a significant decrease in my sex drive. This has been sometimes frustrating and upsetting. Fortunately I have a partner who is understanding and has been willing to help. While sexual side effects are common in most all antidepressant medication, I was still unprepared for it. This side effect is definitely something to be prepared for, and something to discuss with a partner.

Finally, there is one side effect I find slightly baffling. It is somewhat bleakly humorous to think medication prescribed to treat depression and anxiety could have a side effect that provokes depression and anxiety, especially one so ridiculous. I am speaking of the less common side effect of gas. Yes, Effexor XR gives me frequent and almost constant gas. Fortunately it seems mostly odorless. It is annoying, and treatable. I find myself needing to medicate this side effect when going out, to avoid embarrassment.

The side effects of Effexor XR I have experienced are treatable, and livable. While I find the dizzy spells, gas and decreased sexual drive distressing, they are preferable to the crippling depression I experienced before starting Effexor XR.
