Rock Climbing and Bouldering in Alabama: Ideas on Where to Go

Do you enjoy rock climbing and bouldering? Are you headed to Alabama in the near future? If so, you may want to give some thought to visiting a few of the state’s best rock climbing and bouldering destinations. I happen to know of a handful of them. With that said, here’s a short summary on each one:

Moss Rock Preserve

Moss Rock Preserve is located in Jefferson County. Some folks also refer to it as Shades Crest Boulder Fields. It features an assortment of sandstone boulders, sandstone glades and hiking trails. Places to consider climbing include the Ozzy Area and Lost Roof. Speaking of which, I’d also recommend that visitors consider contacting the Southeastern Climbers’ Coalition. They helped to create a detailed map of all the preserve’s best climbing locations. They can also typically provide a wealth of additional information about the area. Those in need of supplementary climbing gear may also want to consider visiting one of the sports retailers located in Birmingham. Overnight accommodations and dining options are available in Birmingham as well. Access to the preserve is free and available year round.

Hurricane Creek Park

Hurricane Creek Park is located in Cullman County. It is also referred to at the William Buddy Rodgers Natural Area. The park offers visitors access to 16 climbing areas. Some of the climbs are top rope. Others are considered rappel spots and bolted climbs. One of the best ways to enjoy the park is to schedule a guided rock climbing session. The guided rock climbing sessions are traditionally offered on the weekends and include equipment rental. Prices for the sessions tend to start at $25 per person and advance reservations are needed. Minors are required to sign a waiver. The park’s hours of operation vary. Visitors should also plan on remitting a modest admission fee.

Horse Pens 40 Park and Campgrounds

Horse Pens 40 Park and Campgrounds is located in Saint Clair County. It features both daytime and evening bouldering opportunities. A signed liability waiver, boulder pads and the use of spotters are required. Rental pads and a camp store are available onsite. The campground typically opens daily, year round. Day use fees tend to start at $8 per person.

First Avenue Rocks

First Avenue Rocks is also located in Birmingham. It is an indoor climbing facility that features a bouldering gym and a roped climbing area. Some of the climbing areas are roughly 15 feet tall. In my opinion, it is a good place to go if you want to learn about bouldering or brush up on your skills. A signed waiver is required and equipment rentals are available onsite. Admission fees tend to start at $10 per person.
