Review: Pureology’s Thickening Masque with Volcanic Ash

If you have very fine and straight hair and keep looking for products that will boost your hair’s volume and body, try looking for products that contain volcanic ash.

How can volcanic ash add body to my hair?
It sounds surprising that this particular ingredient can help you amplify your hair’s volume and improve its texture. The heavier particles found within volcanic ash get distributed throughout your hair using a masque. These particles help to add volume to your hair by sticking to it and adding volume and increasing shine and texture. However, the effects of this treatment last only until you re-wash your hair.

What products contain volcanic ash?
I’ve found that higher-end salon products such as thickening masques may contain volcanic ash as a primary ingredient. Be sure to read the label and ensure that volcanic ash is listed near the top of the ingredient list. If it’s listed as the last ingredient, then the product probably won’t contain enough ash to substantially impact your style.

I’ve used a product for the past 3 months by Pureology called “Thickening Masque” from their Antifade Complex line of hair care products. Volcanic ash is listed as the third ingredient.

After shampooing, I massage the tube for a few seconds and then squeeze out a very small amount of the masque onto my hand. I rub it between my hands with a tiny amount of water and then rub it into my hair, focusing mostly on the roots. I then apply my regular conditioner directly over the top of the masque, wait a few minutes, and then rinse as normal.

This product has a green tint to it with dark grainy ash particles. It has a very pleasing fragrance.

I continue styling as normal, and my hair has been much thicker and bouncier since using the product.

Be warned: this product can be fairly expensive. I spent about $30 for a 5.1 ounce tube at my local salon. However, I expect this tube to last me nearly a year. If you have long hair, you may use the product more quickly than someone with shorter hair.

Where Can I Find a Hair Styling Product with Volcanic Ash?
Check with your hair stylist since she probably carries the Pureology line in her salon. Your stylist may also be able to recommend other brands or treatments just for you.

You may also be able to find this product, or similar product, on eBay for less money than your salon. However, be sure to check the seller’s feedback so you know that you are purchasing a legitimate product.
