1. Dipson Market Arcade Film & Arts Center
639 Main Street
Buffalo, NY 14203
716-855-3022
This is a cozy theatre, with an old school feel. Sometimes they host special shows, plays, or film festivals, which is when there would be a full house. But usually there are a lot of available seats for the regular movies. It’s not uncommon to have the theatre all to yourself or shared with only a small sprinkling of other people.
I always thought the lobby smelt a little strange, but my friend always told me it was just popcorn butter. Besides that, I really like this theatre a lot. If you go there with a friend, I’d recommend getting the large popcorn and fountain drink, because they come with unlimited refills! Also, the Market Arcade is in a great location in downtown Buffalo, and if you’re taking a train, it drops you off almost right in front of the place. It is in between Fountain Plaza and Theatre station, so you could get off at either one.

2. Dipson North Park Art Cinema
1428 Hertel Avenue
Buffalo, NY 14216
716-836-7411
The North Park Theatre opened in 1920 and is a beautiful old building with a painted ceiling, marble entryway, and stained glass exit signs. It has a charming antique feel made complete with the little ticket booth at the front entrance. There is one screen, and they usually play foreign or less mainstream films. It’s located on the Hertel strip, and there are lots of nice restaurants and bars to visit before or after a show.

3. Movieland 8 Theatres
200 Thruway Plaza Drive
Cheektowaga, NY 14225
716-895-3409
Movieland 8 Theatre shows movies that have already been out in other theatres for a while. Sometimes a movie they play can still be in a regular, more expensive theatre, and other times it might already be out on DVD or video. Their tickets ($3.50) are significantly cheaper than other theatres, and on Wednesdays they have a “Big Deal” package for $5.50. The “Big Deal” includes a ticket, a small fountain beverage, and small popcorn. This is a great choice if you want a night out at the movies for a more reasonable price, or there’s a movie you wanted to see that’s already out of the regular theatres. Just remember to carry some green paper when you head there, because they only take payment in cash.
4. Regal Elmwood Center 16
2001 Elmwood Avenue
Buffalo, NY 14207
716-871-0722
The Regal Elmwood is a megaplex with 16 screens, so there is always a wide selection of new movies playing. There is stadium seating and comfortable chairs. They have lots of parking, a large concession stand, and what seems like a cubby hole arcade. There are some places to shop and eat nearby, including a McDonald, Buffalo Wild Wings, Applebees, and Target.
Matinee $7.50
Adult $9.50
Senior $7.50
Child $7.50
5. Regal Walden Galleria
Walden Galleria Mall
6 Walden Galleria
Cheektowaga, NY 14225
716-681-4550
This Regal theatre is located in the Walden Galleria Mall in Cheektowaga, NY. It is brand new and has the biggest, most comfortable seats that I have ever sat in at a movie theatre. Like the Regal Elmwood, the Regal Walden Galleria is also a megaplex with 16 screens, has a big concession stand, and a few arcade games. It’s nice to be able to shop or grab a bite to while you kill time before or after a show.
