Preschool Lesson Plan Ideas for the Color Blue

Are you searching for preschool lesson plans about the color blue? Is blue the color of the week or day? Needing circle time ideas for the color blue? Here are a few suggestions on teaching the color blue.

Encourage the children to wear blue.

One easy idea is to request that all students wear blue. Mark it on the calendar for parents, and send out a note the day before. During circle time, discuss the different shades of blue. Ask that those who are wearing blue to please stand up, or raise their hands.

Create bluebird magnets.

A bluebird craft is a fun and simple way to remember the color blue. Simple print out a clip art picture of a bluebird online, and have the children color it blue. (Search on Yahoo for bluebird clip art for some samples.) When they are finished, laminate their masterpieces and cute them out. Add a sticky magnet onto the back. They will have a simple magnet to stick on their fridge at home.

Read books about blue.

A third idea is to read books about the color blue. This is a great circle time activity. Some to try are The Artist Who Painted A Blue Horse by Eric Carle and Blueberry Mouse by Alice Low. Visit your library and ask the children’s librarian for suggestions.

Serve blue snacks.

A preschool day with the theme of blue would not be complete without enjoying blue snacks. This might be the highlight of the day. For ideas, please read “Blue Snack Ideas for Preschool Lesson Plans.”

Try blueberry painting.

This is a unique, but messy activity. It is probably best for small groups. Give each child a disposable cup, about 5-10 blueberries, and about 1/4 cup of water. Allow each child to squeeze the blueberries into the water to create blue watercolor paint. Then, encourage them to create a picture using the blue paint.
Ask the children to color a blue sky, paint blueberries, or just write their name with the blue paint.
If you don’t feel like using blueberries, try using blue kool-aid.

Make blue macaroni bracelets or necklaces.

Another idea is to create blue macaroni bracelets or necklaces. This will allow your students to work on their fine motor skills. It is not difficult, though it could create a little mess. For instructions on how to dye the macaroni and make the bracelets, read “How to Create Blue Macaroni Bracelets / Necklaces for Preschool Lesson Plans.”

These are just a handful of ideas for teaching the color blue to your preschool students. For more advice, try asking on a teacher forum. Read “Forums for Teachers: Online Teacher Support Groups” for a list.
