Renaissance Faires in Illinois: August Through October, 2007

Fanciful Renaissance fairies will be bringing the past alive in Illinois in the upcoming months. Come one and all to see characters of times past. Knights, fairies, jugglers, minstrels, kings, queens and more will be recreated at the following Renaissance fairs in Illinois. Costumed characters in medieval clothing wander the grounds and interact with visitors. Many visitors get into the spirit of the festival by wearing period clothing and adopting the “Queen’s English”.

Bristol Renaissance Faire

Kenosha, Wisconsin
Every weekend through Labor Day

Technically not in Illinois, but this great Ren-fair is just over the Illinois-Wisconsin State Line, less than an hour’s drive from the City of Chicago. Renaissance fantasy village with Lords, Ladies and Queen Elizabeth I reigning over it all. The cultivated village represented a historical port. Much food, fun, fantasy, merriment, entertainment, and music. Food and drink is plentiful. Visit the tavern booths for mead, ale, beer and wine. Over 155 merchants will be selling their wares. Renaissance food including beef ribs, turkey legs, BBQ, mushrooms, scones, apple pie, fish ‘n chips, shepherd’s pie, Cornish dos, tarts, crepes and more. Bawdy serving wenches, knights, peasants, fairies, elves and royalty wander the grounds throughout the day. Visitors encouraged to get into the spirit of the event by coming in costume, but if costumes aren’t your thing come as your are.

Illinois Renaissance Faire

16th Century Faire offers a chance to step back in time and relive history. The full scale, live reenactment offers a chance to visit the days of Her Royal Majesty, Queen Elizabeth I. Amusing jugglers, exotic foods, bold knight and the lilting sound of lutes will fill the grounds. Actors will perform on various stages. Bold knights will compete for the favor of the Queen and Her majesty’s Royal Court.

The faire is based on a fine summer’s day in 1581 in the Village of Depford, England. Depford is a hamlet filled with folk wisdom and art. The governing Lord Baron de Bourbon s progressive thinker, who has determined that Depford will practice tolerance for all religions, equality of gender and cleanliness.

Villagers invite other to share in the excitement of the visit of Queen Elizabeth I the Queen is in marriage negotiations with a man who is twenty years her junior. There will be representatives and ambassadors from all the Royal Houses of Europe. there will be faraway visitors from Germany, Scotland and Japan.
The Queen’s favorite, Sir Robert Dudley, who has been recently knighted and has secretly married the Queen’s cousin will also be in attendance. The storyline promises to be full of intrigue and excitement as the drama unfolds compliments of the Prairie Players.

The Queen invites everyone in the land to enjoy the festival, as knights joust for her favor. Entertainment includes stage shows, magic acts, jugglers and more. The Marketplace vendors will be hawking wares, such as jewelry, hair accessories, leather, weapon replicas, middle eastern jewelry and Renaissance garb. Feat on Italian Beef Sandwiches, Corn dogs, Polish sausages, Grilled Chicken, Pork Shop Sandwiches, Pumpkin and Cinnamon Rolls.

Admission is $10 Adults, $8 Seniors and $6 children. Children under 5 and active duty and Veterans with Military ID free. Free Parking. In the spirit of the Renaissance, it is customary and traditional for Performers to “pass the hat” for gratuities.

Four Kingdom’s Renaissance Festival

Camelot KOA Campgrounds, Rock Island, Illinois
September 29-20, 2007

This is the third year of the “Four Kingdom’s Renaissance Festival” The festival is so named for it’s location in the Quad cities at Camelot KOA Campgrounds.
Entertainers include Bent River Highland Athletics, Dragon Scales and Fairy Tales, ELIL, Faire Wynds Entertainments, Free Lancers, Kojokan Samurai Dojo, Lady Draga Pa’lfi the Story Teller, Merry Measure, Pazzo the Crazy Minstrel, Shattock Schoole of Defense, Silverthorn, Senach and Vrse, William of Trotter, William O’Wickham and Blackjack and The Windy City Wizard. Wandering Acts include Larry Queen of Scots, King Auberon and Queen Isabeau and their Royal Court, The Pixilated Pixies, Tomas the Troubadour and The Idiot Minstrels. Full Contact Joust is 1 pm to 5 pm daily. There will be Viking long ship rides, music, merriment and more.

Tickets are $10 Adults, Children $5. Two Day Pass: Adults $16k Children $8. Children 7 and under are Free. All are encouraged to dress in period costumes, focused on country peasant attire.

Stronghold’s Olde English Faire

Stronghold Conference Center, Oregon, Illinois
October 6-7, 2007
Come one and all and enjoy the merriment of the Olde English Faire, . Delights of the fairer include wandering entertainers, magic, comedy, minstrels, sword fighters. Merchants and artisans will be selling their wares. Tickets are $8 Adults, $6 Children 5-12. Two day wristband $12 Adults and $6 Children.
