Product Review: Sun® Oxygen Cleaner- All Purpose Stain Remover Powder

It was bound to happen sooner or later, and I’m pleased it finally did. Anytime a company comes up with a winning product, the copycats soon release their version of the same product. I’ve used OxiClean stain remover powder- who doesn’t recognize Billy Mays by now?- since it first hit store shelves. But, at nearly eight dollars for a 3.5 pound bucket, I felt it was a bit pricey. So, I’ve been patiently waiting for an off-brand stain remover that works as well as OxiClean. Read this product review about Sun Oxygen Cleaner- All- Purpose Stain Remover Powder and find out all about it!

Price and Availability
I spotted Sun Oxygen Cleaner at my local Big Lots. A thirty-ounce tub cost $1.97. Comparing this product with Oxiclean, the former costs $1.05 a pound; the latter, $2.25 a pound. What a savings! Now, all I had to do was take it home to see if it really works...

Product Description
Just like OxiClean, Sun Oxygen Cleaner’s main ingredient is Sodium Percarbonate. It also contains Sodium Carbonate. This product is manufactured by Huish Detergents, Incorporated, of Salt Lake City, Utah. Besides the oxygen cleaner, Huish makes a whole line of Sun brand cleaning products, including liquid and powder laundry detergents, CuddleSoft Fabric Softener, SunSations Light Duty and Automatic Dish Detergents and Clout Liquid and Powder Laundry Detergents.

The tub states that Sun Oxygen Cleaner- All- Purpose Stain Remover Powder gets rid of “pet, coffee, food, wine, ink and other stains.” It can also be used as a laundry booster, a tile and grout cleaner, a carpet stain cleaner, and for cleaning outdoors- “awnings, lawn furniture, siding, and unfinished wood decks.” Gosh, does this sound familiar? I remember Bill Mays saying the same thing about cleaning laundry stains and carpet stains with the OxiClean powder. The Sun Oxygen Cleaner sounded like it had a “leg up” on its competition, though, because I don’t recall seeing Billy clean outside items with OxiClean.

There’s also a “General Directions” section on the tub that states, “Do not use on leather, silk, wool or any fabric or surface that may be damaged by water.” And, it states, “Always test for colorfastness first by applying Sun Oxygen Cleaner Powder to an inconspicuous area and allowing it to dry.”

Test Results
An eighth of a cup of Sun Oxygen Cleaner- All- Purpose Stain Remover Powder mixed in sixteen ounces of water can be used to clean countertops, trash cans, fabric, kitchen floors and upholstery. I have tried it several of these surfaces and it worked well.

One scoop of this product in each load of laundry will remove stains and help brighten clothes. I’ve done this and was pleased by the results. For tough stains like fresh blood and grass, I wet the stain, sprinkle a little Sun Oxygen Cleaner on it, then gently rub it together. I then let it soak a few minutes before I toss it in the washing machine.

Two scoops of this product mixed with two tablespoons water makes a gritty paste. Use this paste to clean tiles and grout. I haven’t tried this use yet, but it’s on my “To Do” list.

An eighth of a scoop of Sun Oxygen Cleaner- All- Purpose Stain Remover Powder mixed with two cups water clean carpet stains. I’ve tried this and it worked well.

And, an eighth of a scoop mixed with sixteen ounces of water cleans outside items like awnings, decks, lawn furniture, siding and unfinished wood decks. I’d love to try this, but it’s minus two degrees outside right now- cold enough to freeze your nose shut- so my furniture and siding will have to wait until spring now.

Conclusion
I highly recommend using Sun Oxygen Cleaner- All- Purpose Stain Remover Powder. In my opinion, it works as well as the pricier OxiClean. If you’re like me, you need to cut expenses where you can. So, saving more than 50% by buying this product makes plenty of “cents” to me!
