Product Review: Murray’s Sugar Free Cookies

After my recent bout with heart issues, I have once again dedicated myself to making my body healthier and stronger. That means I have to exercise more and carefully watch what I eat. While cutting back on fatty foods is a given, I also know that it is important to eliminate sugar and white starch from my diet as well.

Thankfully, each year it seems that more and more companies jump aboard the “health” train, offering lower fat and sugar free versions of some of America’s favorite foods. Luckily, these savvy companies also understand our weakness for sweets and they are rising to the challenge.

Dove Chocolate, for example, puts out a sugar free chocolate that is just as good, if not better, than its original version. The same can be said of Murray’s Sugar Free Cookies.

Unlike other cookie brands out there, however, they no longer offer a sugar-loaded version of their sweet treats. Instead, they specialize specifically on sugar-free options sweetened with Splenda. Their commitment shows. They have arguably the best sugar free cookie on the market today.

Murray’s sugar free cookie varieties include:

Chocolate Chip,
Chocolate Chip with Pecans,
Chocolate Sandwich,
Crème Sandwich,
Double Fudge,
Fudge Dipped Grahams,
Fudge Dipped Mint,
Fudge Dipped Shortbread,
Fudge Dipped Vanilla Wafers,
Regular Vanilla Wagers,
Lemon Flavored Wafers,
Lemon Sandwich,
Oatmeal,
Peanut Butter,
Pecan Shortbread,
Regular Shortbread, and
Gingersnaps.

I like most of Murray’s Sugar Free cookies, but I am an avid fan of their gingersnaps. They are, as the kids say today, “to die for!” They have to be because I don’t even like gingerbread. But I love these cookies. They are perfectly sweetened so ensure no fake aftertaste. They are crispy and crunchy or can be made soft and pliable if you prefer them that way.

In most wafer cookies, like the gingersnaps, a total of seven cookies makes up a serving size. One serving equates to 130 calories. Those who are counting calories rather than watching sugar intake may, therefore, not consider these cookies a good deal. For me, however, with my concern about sugar, they are perfect.

Please be aware that Murray’s cookies do have five grams of fat and 120 milligrams of sodium. However, they are cholesterol free and have measurable amounts of dietary fiber and protein.

All of those figures, of course, alter somewhat from cookie to cookie. It is, therefore, important that anyone considering a Murray’s purchase, read the side panel of the cookie package before buying. That will outline accurate readings for that chosen variety.

As if offering great tasting sugar free cookies aren’t enough, Murray’s also provides a series of dessert recipes on their website. These outline how you can make wonderful low sugar or sugar free desserts using their cookies as a base.

Murray’s bills itself as “America’s number one brand of sugar free cookies.” They deserve that title. Father and son team John L. Murray and John Jr. began making vanilla wafers in 1940. However, they quickly discovered a growing need for sugar free options for America’s growing number of diabetics. The rest, as they say, is history.

Be aware, if you are looking for Murray’s on the grocery shelf, their packaging has changed. They have recently underwent modernization and now have a new, clean and clear package. However, don’t worry. The taste of the cookies is just as good as ever.

Murray’s cookies typically range between $1.99 and $2.99 per package. They can be found at most major grocery chains and certain discount department stores that also carry groceries.

Anyway, you cut it, these cookies at tops. Therefore, I give this product five out of five stars.
