Product Review: Kellogg’s Special K Blueberry

For any fan of Kellogg’s Special K family of cereals, there is a new option on the store shelves: Special K Blueberry. This intriguing new cereal is probably playing off the success of the incredibly popular Special K Red Berries (I mean, who would want plain Special K if you can have delicious dehydrated strawberry slices in it for the same price?), but I doubt it will even get close to that level of popularity.

Kellogg’s Special K Blueberry Review: Appearance

I was a little bit surprised when I poured my first bowl of this cereal because there aren’t any items in the box that look like fresh blueberries. I expected the same thing as the strawberry flavor, with whole or half blueberries mixed in with the original Special K flakes, but instead, the blueberries are mixed into the flakes.

In addition to the blueberry specks in the Special K flakes, there are also blueberry specks in the little blueberry and oat clusters, which are sugary, crunchy, and delicious. However, there is nothing in the box of cereal that even closely resembles a whole blueberry, which is a little bit disappointing.

Kellogg’s Special K Blueberry Review: Taste

The good news is that even though you can’t see blueberries too well, you can really taste them. In fact, I would say that the Special K Blueberry has a little bit too much blueberry for my liking. It is a little bit overwhelming because instead of the occasional blueberry in the bowl, the stuff is all over the place, in every bit of every bite.

In addition, I find the cereal to be overall just a little bit too sugary. I tend to like my cereals more hearty, and I love the balance of sweetness and healthiness in the original Special K. I find that the blueberry went a little to the extreme on sugar, with 7 grams per ¾ cup serving. This leaves the milk at the bottom of the bowl tasting more like a melted milkshake, which I don’t find to be very pleasant.

Kellogg’s Special K Blueberry Review: Overall Nutrition

Despite my complaints about the sugar content of the cereal, it is overall a very good breakfast choice. In a ¾ cup serving (which I must admit is probably not enough of a breakfast for the average adult), you will find only 100 calories, with no fat, although you should remember that if you add milk, you might be adding fat.

In addition, you will end up with 170mg of sodium, 40mg of potassium, and a whopping 23g of carbohydrate. You will generally get a lot of vitamins as well, with about 1/3 of your daily value of the basics such as vitamin C, iron, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid, and vitamin B6 and B12.

In conclusion, Kellogg’s Special K Blueberry is a worthwhile cereal, but some Special K fans might find themselves longing for one of the other flavors. I know I won’t plan to buy any more, but that is because I prefer the taste of the red berries variety.
