Avon Ideal Shade Concealer Stick Review

Avon Ideal Shade Concealer Stick comes in a container that looks like a thin tube of lipstick. It is slim and fits easily into a purse or make-up bag. The tube rolls up like lipstick would. Roll it up to apply, and roll it back down when you are finished.

The concealer is angled along the top, so it sits flush with your skin when you are applying it. With use that angled edge wore down and the top became a bit rounded. I prefer the sticks that come to a point, like lipstick does.

Avon makes this in several skin tone shades. I have fair skin that tans well in the summer, so I purchased this concealer stick in both the light and medium shades. In the Avon brochures they always have color photos showing the color of the product, so you can try to match it to your skin color, but I have found they aren’t an accurate guide to go by. However, if you don’t get the correct shade for your skin, your Avon representative can either exchange it for another, or give you a refund.

I have given this concealing stick a good try, it has been sitting in the bottom of my make-up bag, and is a product that I rarely use. The tube rolls up nicely, and the concealer smells almost identical to a foundation I use. Avon claims that this concealer will “Visibly conceal undereye circles and blemishes.

I have a tiny red vein to the left of my upper lip. It drives me crazy. I don’t even know when that unwelcome guest made it’s appearance. It was just THERE one day. Although it is not very noticeable, of course I see it every time I look in the mirror! (Hubby tells me that nobody notices, but that somehow doesn’t console me.) The Avon Ideal Shade Concealer Stick does not do a very good job of covering it up, even after applying it and dabbing it into my skin several times.

Ditto for using it to hide an age spot next to my eye. Again, after trying several times to get it right, I just can’t make it look natural. I think the biggest problem with this cosmetic is that it is too dry. When I apply it, I actually see caking on my face. Just the opposite of my Physician’s Formula products, which seem to have a nice moisturizer in them and smoothly glide over my skin. I have some fine lines on my face, and this product really tends to accentuate those areas.

My Physician’s Formula will give me all day coverage, but the Avon Concealing Stick does not – it may last a few hours, but wears off much sooner than I want it to.

I have learned to apply my morning moisturizer, then my foundation first. If I use the concealer stick and put foundation on after it, the act of lightly spreading the foundation over my face actually removes the concealer, and I have to go back and do it all over again. So now, no matter what concealer I use, I do it after my foundation is applied. Then I use a light face powder to cover everything up and blend it all together.

Avon sells this concealer stick for $6.00, plus shipping, and it is often on sale for around $4.00. Considering the high cost of cosmetics, that is indeed a value price, but I don’t feel like I received a quality product for my money. I can buy a really nice Physician’s Formula stick concealer for a couple dollars more in my local grocery store, and I find the Physician’s Formula is a superior product, at least for me.

I used to think that buying Avon was a win-win situation, I even used to sell their products. Avon says they have a satisfaction guarantee. Their policy used to be great, if a customer didn’t like a product I simply gave them a full refund – Avon would credit my next order and ask me to throw the cosmetics away. Obviously this system was abused, because my last Avon lady said she now has to return all these items to Avon and the customer does not get their shipping refunded – so you don’t get 100% of your money back like you used to. Still, their guarantee is better than most of cosmetic brands that I used to purchase at the supermarket.

Bottom line, for the price, there are much better concealers on the market, and for me they are much more accessible than ordering from Avon and waiting for 2 weeks for my order to arrive. I would not buy this again. It’s time to toss both of my Avon Precise Shade Concealer Sticks and go back to Physician’s Formula. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this product. It very well may work for someone else, and for the price it is surely worth trying.
