Product Review: Campbell’s Country Style Sausage Gravy

I love biscuits and gravy, and when I moved from the eastern part of northern Indiana I left behind my favorite resource for country style gravy. Southeastern Mills Country Style Gravy was buy far the easiest gravy to prepare for classic biscuits and gravy, and it was by far the tastiest I had ever found. I recently purchased a can of Campbell’s Country Style Sausage Gravy, and I had my doubts if it would stand up to Southeastern Mills Country Style Gravy, but it was worth a try. The following review will provide you with facts and information on Campbell’s Country Style Sausage Gravy along with my personal opinion regarding the taste, quality, and consistency of this Campbell’s product.

Ingredients and Nutritional Facts

Most people realize that any type of fat-based sauce is high in calories, especially when it contains sausage, but Campbell’s Country Style Sausage Gravy is relatively low in fat compared to homemade varieties. A ¼ cup serving has just 5 grams of fat, and that’s really low considering the contents. On the other hand, one single serving of Campbell’s has a whopping 70 calories. This doesn’t sound like much, but ¼ cup is a very small serving. The 14 ½ ounce can holds 7 servings according to the label, but in reality it wouldn’t serve 7 hungry people. Realistically it would serve 4 people at the very most.

The first five ingredients in Campbell’s Country Style Sausage Gravy is water, cooked sausage, pork seasoning, vegetable oil, and modified food starch. This Campbell’s product is also somewhat high in sodium. A ¼ cup serving contains 270 mg or 11% of the daily value. Considering that most people would consume at least ½ cup, this is a lot of salt for a single meal.

Nutritional value is quite low in a ¼ cup serving of Campbell’s Country Style Sausage Gravy. It contains no iron, no calcium, no vitamin A, no vitamin C, and only 2 grams of protein. These amounts are based on a 2,000 calorie diet.

Taste, Consistency, and Product Quality

The texture of this Campbell’s product is very smooth, but it was quite salty for my palate. I don’t usually salt foods, and the strong taste of salt was overwhelming in my opinion. Someone who likes a lot of salt might not have noticed. In addition, I wasn’t impressed by the sausage in this product. It wasn’t at all like the type of sausage I would add to country style gravy if I had made it from scratch, and I usually use Jimmy Dean’s or Bob Evans. This type of sausage seemed less crumbly and had a slightly unusual flavor.

Overall, I wasn’t impressed by Campbell’s Country Style Sausage Gravy. My son didn’t complain, but because of the saltiness, and because I didn’t particularly like the flavor of the sausage, I have no plans of buying this Campbell’s product in the future. It was less than $2.00 a can, but I would have rather purchased Southeastern Mills Country Style mix if it had been available in my local store.
