There are a couple of different ghost tours available in the metro Atlanta area and both offer something a little different. If you like your tour guides dressed up in period clothing and bellowing spooky stories in a fake southern accent then you should check out Lawrenceville’s “Scary Stroll” but if, like me, you are more interested in hearing ghost stories with a bunch of the tour guides personal experiences thrown in then the Roswell tour is a perfect choice.
Before I talk about the tour itself there are a couple of things you need to know. The tour is about 1 mile and 2 hours long so wear some comfortable shoes and bring along a couple of bottles of water as it can get a little tiring. You may also want to keep the distance in mind if you are thinking about bringing the kids along. It’s also recommended that you bring a flashlight as it will get dark before the tour is over and you are encouraged to take photographs. On the occasions that I have gone I’ve taken my digital recorder along in the hopes of picking up some EVP’s (electronic voice phenomena), but with no luck as of yet. I would also suggest that you call ahead and make reservations for the night you want as it can get pretty crowded and you’ll want to guarantee yourself a spot.
The tour meets and begins at the bandstand in the center of old town Roswell at 8 PM sharp. The first stop is at Bulloch Hall and the stories that they tell about that place will make your hair stand on end. It really is a great starting spot for the tour and you’ll be thankful that it’s still light out by the time you hear the first story. I’m going to go back again around Halloween when it will be dark from the start which will make the initial haunted locales all the spookier. From there you make your way through a large art of the old town stopping along the way to hear more stories and personal experiences from your tour guide. By the time you reach the halfway point at an old cemetery, the light, and some peoples nerves are beginning to fail.
The second half of the tour is definitely the best as you hit the most active spots in the town and the chances of seeing or feeling something increase exponentially. It is pitch black by the time you reach the final spot and its here that you’ll be glad you brought a flashlight. You end up at a place the guides call simply enough “The Spooky House”, and it is the single most creepy location I have ever seen. I won’t spoil it by telling you more about it but the place and the stories attached to it left me and a number of others in the group visibly shaken.
This tour is a must for fans of ghosts and the paranormal. The stories are great and will make you want to go back and go around with a different tour guide as each one has a bunch of different personal experiences from their time spent hosting the tour. My last piece of advice to you all would be to not look behind you when you are out walking as you never know who or what might be following….BOO!!
