Munny: The Vinyl Toy that You Can Decorate

Munny is a blank vinyl toy that has a large rounded head and small boy designed so that they can be fully customized. They are produced by a the reputable company Kid Robot who specialize is producing toys with limited runs. They have many lines of clothing and toys all produced in limited numbers. The toys and clothes might seem a little pricey at first, but to those of us who enjoy owning something that may never be produced again is worth spending an extra dollar on.

Munny is becoming the latest craze within various artist communities. The main Munny package come with one seven inch Munny (white, black, or glow in the dark), a “hi, my name is” card and four mystery props that can be anything from a hats and crayons, to goggles and skateboards. The normal size (seven inch) Munny will run you 24.95 at a typical retailer or directly from the web site. In addition to the seven inch Munny they just released a four inch “Mini Munny” That come in white, pink, and blue and they come with a name card and one mystery prop and only cost 9.95. In contrast to the mini they also have the Mega Munny which stands a towering eighteen inches high. They run 199.95, but do not come with any props. Instead, they have a large practice sheet for designing your Munny and a coloring posted.

The real aesthetic of these is that they are essentially a blank canvas that takes a variety of mediums rather well (colored pencil, spay paint, they can be primed for use with different paints, and you can even find tutorials on how to dye the Munny). The most popular medium being acrylic paint. Munny can also be baked at a low temperature (200-230F), making them excellent for use with polymer clay (super sculpey). This makes it easy to add just about anything you want to your Munny, that means extra arms, tentacles, heads, whatever you want. Their heads and arms are easily removed and reattached so that you may paint or decorate the parts separately. The vinyl is easy drilled with a hand drill to allow you to securely anchor anything you want to it. People do a vast variety of very artistic things with Munny and there are very elaborate designs all over the internet. If you do an image search on a popular search engine you will probably be surprised on how expansive creative styles run for such a simple toy.

I own two Munnys, one of which is going to be used at a cake topper for my upcoming wedding (my fiance, is making one also) and think they are an excellent way for many people from various artistic talents to be able to come together and create something entirely unique out of a mass produced item. It is truly amazing to see how many different ways different people see the same item.
