I saw Disney/Pixar’s Finding Nemo (2003) for the first time on a big screen in a dark movie theater, just the way filmmakers intended (or so I thought, but more on that later). Within the first few minutes, I was enchanted. During the moving first scenes, tears rolled down my cheeks. I had already forgotten that I was watching a movie and suspended my belief that fish can’t talk. By the time the lights came up in the theater, Finding Nemo had become my favorite animated film of all time, a title that it still holds to this day, even though there are many exceptional contenders.
Finding Nemo isn’t all tearful moments, in fact, it’s a comedy, and it’s one of those comedies that is actually funny, to both kids and adults. It tells a great parent-child story about a bold young clownfish, Nemo, who yearns for independence and his overprotective, but caring, father, Marlin, who worries about whether Nemo will be okay if he steps (I mean, swims) out into the big world.
In September of 2012, along with countless Finding Nemo fans, I returned to the movie theater to watch the movie the way filmmakers actually intended: in 3D. According to John Lasseter, the film’s executive producer, “Finding Nemo was originally shot in 3D. At last, with today’s technological advances, this spectacular underwater world can be seen as it was intended.”
“Spectacular” is an excellent description of Finding Nemo 3D! The vibrant coral reef and the underwater images were beautiful and seemed almost real in 3D. And my favorite characters came to life even more: Nemo (voiced by Alexander Gould); Marlin (Albert Brooks); the ditzy (but, thanks to the talents of Ellen DeGeneres, in an endearing way) blue tang fish, Dory; the little surfer-dude sea turtle, Squirt (Nicholas Bird); and Squirt’s dad, Crush (voiced by writer-director Andrew Stanton).
With Finding Nemo 3D, I no longer felt that I was watching the movie; I was experiencing it. It was like going on a 100-minute ride at Disneyland, a ride I can’t wait to go on again!
