Mountain Biking 2012: The Top 5 Men’s Biking Helmets of 2012

The season for mountain biking and hitting the trails is here. In a separate article, I highlighted the Top 5 mountain bikes. With a low profile and great ventilation, this is the best and lightest helmet that money can buy. An aerodynamic design makes for a smoother and faster ride. This helmet is what the pros use, but you don’t have to be a pro to appreciate and own the best. Priced at $199.99, the price may be the only downside to this helmet. To get the best, you pay for the best.

Number Two- Lithos

This is the helmet for the serious mountain biker. The Lithos is designed to be durable, yet light weight, and will provide you with the protection you need even on the roughest trails. You can be sure that your safety is secure when wearing this helmet, giving you the option to focus on the excitement of the adventure. Trust in your safety equipment is paramount and with this helmet it is guaranteed to give you the best protection possible. Priced at $129.99, this may be the best investment you ever made. With a sturdier, tougher helmet comes less comfort, so don’t expect it to be too cushy.

Number Three- Circuit

This is the best, all-around, multi-purpose helmet out there. It is ready for use on the road or the trail, and was designed with comfort, aerodynamics, and maximum ventilation in mind, and is also ultra-light weight. The Circuit was basically engineered using rocket science. At the affordable price of $99.99, it is a great helmet at a great cost, especially when it comes to your safety. The only drawback is that it is so light weight and airy, that your mind might tell your body to be overly cautious when making that big jump or downhill run.

Number Four- Quantum

The Quantum is another helmet that has dual capability on both the road and the trail. This helmet features great overall coverage of your head and is well ventilated and was designed with comfort in mind. It also has a detachable visor making it a great helmet for any type of riding conditions. Priced at $64.99, it is a very affordable, but quality helmet. Having noted that, one must also realize that when it comes to products like these, the lower you go in price, the lower the best possible protection gets. This helmet is great for the weekend warrior, but may not be suitable for the more serious competitor.

Number Five- Solstice

This helmet is extremely comfortable and was designed to be so as soon as you put it on. The Solstice is a multi-purpose helmet that can be used by men, women, and children, and is a universal one size fits all style. It is very affordable at $44.99 and provides the necessary protection you need. However, for as versatile as it is, this helmet is adequate for your general bike ride, but is not recommended for more serious trails or for any type of serious competition. It is quality protection, but at the minimum. It is still a Bontrager, though, which means it is the best helmet you can get in this price range.

I am mountain biker, but not at a serious or competitive level. However, I love hiking, and own two mountain bikes, and soon plan to combine the two in a more fundamental way for my training when it comes to running. Also, my boys ride bikes, and their safety and protection of their heads is of the utmost importance to me.
