Morton’s Steakhouse: Brooklyn, New York

Located in the busy court district of downtown Brooklyn, Morton’s Steakhouse reflects the traditional New York steakhouse. They have locations throughout the country as well as select international cities.

A large sports bar with booth seating offers up an extensive cocktail and wine listing as well as appetizers. Get there during happy hour for special pricing. However, be prepared for the elevated noise level. At this venue, I had to try my favorite cocktail, which they call Three Olives Chocolate Martini (for the type of vodka used), and boy, was it a treat. Creamy, cold, and chocolaty – is there anything better?

In adhering to tradition, the server will approach your table with a food cart which includes a live lobster. You will get an extensive and quickly spoken food presentation from the server, so be sure and listen up. And yes, there is also a large dessert tray with many delectable classics, such as Cheesecake and Carrot Cake. Morton’s renowned dessert is a Hot Chocolate Cake.

As usual, I am skipping ahead straight to dessert. The appetizers and main course deserve their spotlight as well. It was my guest’s birthday which I had notified Morton’s of ahead of time. We each received a customized menu with her name printed on top. Although the appetizer selection was extensive and mouth-watering, there were not too many non-seafood options available. I thought this strange for a steakhouse, although I get that pairing seafood with steak is a wonderful relationship.

In terms of non-seafood items, you are pretty much just looking at soups and salads. I tried their Colossal Shrimp Alexander – three jumbo, scrumptious shrimp with a side of Beurre Blanc sauce. I was seriously full after eating this. Well, I have to attribute this to the initial onion loaf and butter I shared with my guest. Oh, and the chocolate martini also did not help. My guest had the Chopped Salad which was a hefty portion (then again, this is a steakhouse). Its typical salad ingredients meshed together well and the whole thing tasted fresh and delicious.

My guest was eagerly anticipating the Single Cut Filet Mignon with a side of Bearnaise Sauce, and me, the Broiled Salmon Fillet; even if we were completely full. My salmon came first with the filet mignon lagging a few minutes behind. The server was completely apologetic for this, nice and professional. The salmon also came with a side of Beurre Blanc sauce, same as the appetizer shrimp. This is probably not a good idea – too much sauce in one sitting. It was a wonderful sauce, however. As expected, we could not finish our meals and took the rest home to eat later.

As in your typical upscale steakhouse, you have a myriad of side dishes to accompany your hefty main course portions. We decided to give the Hash Brown and Creamed Spinach a try. The Hash Brown looked like a pie. It was crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. It tasted warm and fresh and flavorful. The Server offered sour cream which brightened the dish. The Creamed Spinach tasted equally warm, fresh and flavorful. It went well with the salmon and steak.

Now back to dessert. Yes, we did order one to share, their classic Hot Chocolate Cake, which lived up to its legendary reputation. Since it was my guest’s birthday, we got a dessert on the house, complete with a rendition of the Happy Birthday song. The Chocolate Cake was presented with a candle and a side of vanilla ice cream. It was hot and gooey on the inside. What a treat. All in all, it was a nice time, and I would return. I would probably not eat anything that whole day before arriving though.

Although some of Morton’s locations offer valet parking, this one does not and will direct you to the Marriott parking lot next door. Try to arrive without your car as parking is difficult to locate in this area. Of course, you can park next door and get special pricing, courtesy Morton’s.
