How to Tips for Shaving Your Head

Going bald? Have thinning hair? Well, here are some tips that will help those of you that decided to FINALLY ‘bite the bullet’ and embrace the idea of having a clean shaven head.

Alright, just to get this out of the way, no matter what, you will probably nick yourself at some point in time, especially in the beginning. This is a concern for many people, and the tips here are meant to help minimize those nicks, because you really don’t want your head to look like you got hit by a bunch of shrapnel. For example, I have a small scar that I ‘catch’ with my razor often enough…even though I know it’s there, and has been there for a long time. Also, no one’s head is an absolute perfect shaving surface, so you do want to be careful for many reasons. Regardless of what anyone tells you, you do NOT want to wax your head or use hair removal products on your head such as Nair, etc. Also, DO NOT use a brand new razor!

Now, before you go anywhere near a razor to clean shave your head, you should take a shears or beard trimmer to what you have left ‘up top’ to get it as short as possible. After that first step, then you are ready to get down to business.

I use Schick Tracer FX, however I do not believe they make them anymore. So, what you would want to use is either a single or double blade razor. The Tracer razor actually flexes or has a bend to it when pressing on a curved surface, which helps. I would never use a 3 or a 4 blade one because if it does catch- OUCH!!. There will be more blood running down your head than the prom scene in the movie Carrie. When I break a new razor open, I’ll use it on my face for awhile to ‘dull’ it down enough before using it on the top of his head. I find that when it’s getting too dull for my face is when it’s ready for the melon…..and even then do not press down as hard as you might on your face. So, I actually have two razors, one for my face and one for my head.

People do ask me ‘What do you put on your head to shave?” (As far as shaving cream). Actually, what I find that works the best is straight Aloe. Yeah, the stuff normally used for sunburns! It is very smooth and cuts down on the nicks and gouges a lot better than using regular shaving cream, for example. A second option would be shaving gel, although that can get pricey.

I would suggest using a mirror for the sides and the top of your head to guide you as you would when shaving your face. To be honest, when it comes to the back of your head, it’s all done by feel. One hand will obviously be doing the shaving while the other hand is feeling to make sure you didn’t miss a section. That part takes the most practice, but after doing it a few times will become much easier than it sounds.
