How to Remove Water Marks from Wood

You’ve taken good care of your wood furniture, and have left coasters out for guests to use so they won’t leave water marks on it. But then, during a party some dummy left their ice cold drink on your coffee table. Don’t you just hate it when people are so inconsiderate? Before you break out the shotgun, take a deep breath and know that you can remove water marks from wood. It is surprisingly easy to learn how to remove water marks from wood, and you won’t need any expensive materials either. Simply follow the tips and suggested listed below and you can remove water stains in no time at all.

There are a few different methods you can use to remove water marks from furniture. We’ll start with one of the easiest. It may sound a little odd, but mayonnaise can be used to effectively remove water stains. I like this option because it involves no harsh chemicals and virtually everyone already has mayonnaise in their home, so it won’t cost you a cent. For best results, treat the water stain as soon as possible.

How to remove water marks from wood with mayonnaise:

STEP 1 – Take about two tablespoons of mayonnaise and rub it into the water mark. Don’t wipe off any excess.

STEP 2 – To keep the mayonnaise from drying out, cover the area lightly with a cloth, paper towels, or cling wrap.

STEP 3 – Let it set for several hours, or even overnight.

STEP 4 – Wipe off the mayonnaise and your water stain should be completely gone. Be sure to clean the surface well to remove all traces of mayonnaise.

TIP – If you have a water mark that is extremely bad, or has been in place for a very long time, the mayonnaise alone may not be enough to remove it. In that case, try mixing the mayonnaise with cigarette ashes and follow the same steps listed above.

Another way to remove water marks from wood is with the use of toothpaste. Yes, toothpaste! Keep in mind that you want to use good old-fashioned paste toothpaste to remove water stains. None of that gel or mouthwash-infused toothpaste. Remember, for best results, treat the water stain as soon as possible.

How to remove water marks from wood with toothpaste:

STEP 1 – Dab a bit of toothpaste on a soft cloth.

STEP 2 – Use a circular motion to rub the toothpaste deep into the water mark.

STEP 3 – Continue rubbing until you notice the water mark begin to disappear.

STEP 4 – Get a separate cloth and begin to buff all signs of the toothpaste off.

STEP 5 – Apply a furniture polish to shine the surface. You should see no further signs of a water mark.

Aside from banning all beverages from the living room, there is no sure way to prevent future water stains from happening. Keep coasters out for guests to use, or place table runners on tables to protect the wood. If nothing else works, make your guests learn how to remove water marks and make them do it themselves!
