10 Meaningful Movie Quotes from Favorite Films

It usually doesn’t take someone long to answer when they are asked, “Hey, what’s your favorite movie quote?” But if you are asked why you love it, or what it means to you, sometimes you are completely stumped. When I chose to write this I sat down and wrote every movie quote I could think of, and narrowed it down to about 20. After that, I took that list and went through every single one, trying to remember what it was that made it special, and what meanings it had to me. The result is my very own (drum roll please) top 10 movie quotes list.

Now before you begin reading, know that not every quote on here is the norm for “meaningful.” Some of these are quite funny. However you will understand why I chose these when we get to it. Now to start.

10. “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse (The Godfather, 1972)”

I choose this as my number 10 mainly because of the impact it had when I first heard it. “…an offer he can’t refuse!” It sent a shiver down my spine when it was said and I guarantee many other people feel the same. It gave the movie watcher the idea that the “offer” was going to be something drastic and couldn’t wait to see what it was. Plus the way it was said the first time, it was so beautiful. It was cold, cunning, and just made Marlon Brando look like a complete bad-ass. One of the most threatening quotes I’ve ever heard.

9. “You can’t handle the truth!” (A Few Good Men, 1992)

I think I was just about 6 or 7 when I heard this, and man do I remember saying it all the time. And I wasn’t the only one. Everywhere I go people were saying that line. It is possibly one of the best comeback lines ever in the movies. And much credit goes to Jack Nicholson. He was already known as one of the best actors, but his face, his voice, everything in that scene made it a perfect line.

8. “Mama always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” (Forest Gump, 1994)

That line, truthfully, summarized everybody’s life in only 17 words. It was remarkable how, when you heard that line, you just bowed your head down and just thought for a second. Yes it’s corny, yes it’s been made fun by everyone, but in reality it will go down as one of the most impact lines of our generation, and generations to come!

7. Striker: “Surely you can’t be serious!” Rumack: “I am serious… and don’t call me Shirley.” (Airplane!, 1980)

Ok I know, not the greatest line in the world, and probably don’t mean anything to most people, but to me this one is a classic. That entire movie was filled with great quotes that had you holding your side laughing. However this line did it for me. Mainly because me and my friends, from the say we saw it, to even now quote those lines for no reason. It’s a fun, remarkable, and stands out as just straight stupidity at its best.

6. “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, 1986)

I don’t care what year you were born, or how much of a goodie two shoes you were/are in high school, this movie represented every high schooler’s (that’s probably not even a word) dream skip day. I love this movie. And of everything said, this line hit’s me the most. It made you want to stop and just look around and enjoy life…well it did that for me. That one line alone taught to sit back relax, and take a breather once in a while.

5. What’s the matter, Colonel Sandurz…CHICKEN?! (Spaceballs, 1987)

Once again a funny quote and a beautiful play on words. I love to laugh and think it’s a necessity in life, and with this quote, it’s with me forever. There are even some days I just think about it and I start cracking up for no reason.

4. We’ll always have Paris.” (Casablanca, 1972)

Let me start off by saying Casablanca is my all time favorite movie. It had everything, including great dialogue and one-liners. This one for me hit a beautiful note in the movie, letting the movie watcher know that it’s always good to have at least one good memory in your life.

3. “Do, or do not. There is no try.” (Star Wars, 1977)

What more can I say about this line that you don’t already know. Don’t try…Just DO IT!!!!

2. “May the Force be with you.” (Star Wars, 1977)

Ok so I figured you were expecting something really meaningful for the last 2. Unfortunately you’re gonna have to wait for number 1, because this is one of my all time favorite lines. It was just fitting. It gave the force meaning and made it bigger than life (exactly how it was portrayed). I give this line 10 stars and will give it 10 more every time I hear it.

AND NOW FOR NUMBERO UNO!!!!!!

1. “Here’s looking at you, kid.” (Casablanca, 1942)

This line has gotten me the good spirits of a lot of girls in my time, and also got me a little teary eyed when I heard it. It was a beautiful line, filled with emotion and cunningness. It touched the movie watcher, made them say “awww” and help lead Casablanca into being one of the best movies ever.

So there you go. Hope you enjoyed this journey with me and thank you for reading this. Now you see that movie quotes don’t always have to be serious. Sometimes a little umph is all it needs.
