How to Remove Sweat Stains from Clothing

Learn how to extend the life of your clothes by using these easy sweat stain removal tips and tricks. Light-colored fabrics are prone to sweat stains, especially clothing that rests against our body. The brims of hats will yellow, pesky underarm stains appear, and white bedsheets begin to discolor over time. Keep your clothes looking like new with these five natural sweat stain removal strategies!

Be sure to test the stain removing solutions and pastes on a small, hidden area first (such as the inside of a hat or the underarm area of a shirt). This is especially important with colored clothing, since you don’t want discoloration to occur. You can also turn the clothing inside out and treat the sweat stain using the same methods.

Sweat stains can become more difficult to remove over time, so it’s always best to treat the stain as quicklly as possible. Try one or all of the sweat stain removing strategies I’ve outlined below on the most stubborn sweat stains. Before putting your clothing in the clothes dryer, be sure to check and make sure the stain has been completely removed. If it hasn’t, repeat the same process again or try another way of removing sweat stains. Just remember – stains become more difficult to remove once they’re been through the drying cycle!

TRICKS FOR REMOVING SWEAT STAINS FROM FABRIC

Sweat Stain Removal Strategy 1: White Vinegar Solution
Mix four tablespoons of white vinegar with two cups of water. This dilutes the vinegar to help protect colored clothing. Apply the solution to the sweat stained area and let sit for half an hour to an hour. Wash the clothing on the cold cycle to continue the stain removal process. You can also wash the clothing by hand if you’re working with delicate fabric.

Sweat Stain Removal Strategy 2: Baking Soda Paste
Mix four tablespoons of baking soda with 1/4 cup of warm water. This will create a baking soda paste that aids in stain removal. Rub a generous portion of the paste into the sweat stained area and let sit for an hour. Rinse and wash the clothing as normal.

Sweat Stain Removal Strategy 3: Lemon Juice
Yes, you read that right – lemon juice! Mix equal parts lemon juice (fresh or bottled) and water. Apply the lemon juice solution to your sweat-stained clothes and scrub the clothing until the stain comes out. Launder as usual. If it’s a bright, sunny day, hang your clothing outdoors to dry in the sun. The sun will enhance the stain removing power of the lemon and citric acid.

Sweat Stain Removal Strategy 4: Aspirin Solution or Paste
Solution: Crush two aspirin pills and mix with 1/2 cup warm water. Soak the stained area of the clothing in the solution for two to three hours, then wash as usual.

Paste: Crush two aspirin pills and mix with a small amount of water to form a paste. Apply the paste to the sweat stain and let sit for half an hour to an hour. Thoroughly rinse off the paste with cold water and wash as usual.

Sweat Stain Removal Strategy 5: Salt Water
Mix one tablespoon salt with one cup of warm water. Sponge the solution on the sweat stain until the stain has been completely removed. Rinse and launder the clothing as usual.
