How to Have a Green Staycation in Houston

It’s easy to have a staycation in Houston. Such a large city has countless attractions, events, and activities. But what about a green or sustainable staycation? Is it possible to have a green staycation in Houston? As a resident and advocate for green living, I’m here to tell you that it certainly is! Sustainable and green staycation accommodations, food, and attractions are in abundance in Houston.

Sustainable Staycation Accommodations in Houston

Just because you’re staying at home for your vacation doesn’t mean you have to stay at home. You can book hotel or other housing accommodations just as you would if you were traveling outside your area. What about sustainable accommodations? Try Strawmanor, a straw bale vacation home that’s available for renting. This sustainable retreat home is full of amenities and attractions, such as therapeutic spa packages, eco-friendly wine tours, complimentary concierge services, horseback riding, canoeing, sports, wildlife adventures, green event planning, and more. To book reservations or for questions nad info, call (866) 860 – 4007.

Sustainable and Green Staycation Attractions , Food, and More

If you need to get your hair done before a night out on the town, try dotdot Salon, Houston’s first green hair salon. Whether you need to grab a quick bite to eat or need some green groceries, A Moveable Feast can help. This is Houston’s premier green restaurant and grocer all in one! Kids and adults alike will enjoy sitting outside in the butterfly garden when the weather’s right.

For some unique and green local art, check out Nate’s Recycled Art. He uses recycled items to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Many of his artwork includes pieces of materials destroyed by Hurricane Ike in Houston. For green souvenirs you can wear, try the Green Fly Shop, but these clothing items are not for kids. To wow the kids, hire Snow Dog Ice Cream for a green party. Solar panels are used in storing the ice cream.

No Houston staycation is complete without entertainment. The Discovery Green Houston downtown park is LEED certified and offers a whole host of fun events. Sundays from noon to four catch the Urban Harvest Farmer’s Market at the Discovery Green. Thursday nights feature a concert series. Kids, blankets, lawn chairs, and even dogs are welcome at Discovery Green. There’s likely to be one or more staycation events going on just about every day at Discovery Green park.

To make your Houston staycation as green as possible, bring your recyclable items to Discovery Green every Saturday from 10am to 2pm as it partners with the City of Houston to be a drop-off location. If you’re still needing another taste of the recycling culture, check out the Beer Can House. It’s been featured on Ripley’s Believe it or not and it’s estimated that over 50,000 beer cans were used in its design. This is but a sampling of all the great sustainable and green fun you can have in Houston.
