How to Get Cheap Diapers!

Today, I was looking at three different organizations (LA Diaper Drive, The Diaper Drive, and The Greater Philadelphia Diaper Bank) across the United States. Each has a mission of providing diapers to low income families through their partners. They collect the diapers through donation and sponsor donation drives. The diapers are given to organizations that provide the diapers to low income families.

I am a firm believer in giving. At the same time, I am a firm believer in doing for oneself and not depending on others. Each site gave stats about low income and diapers. Each site also affirmed how government sponsored programs, such as WIC and Food Stamps (EBT, Snap) don’t pay for diapers.

I have received welfare, food stamps, WIC and other assistance. I’m not proud of it. I didn’t like it. I worked hard to get off of those programs.

Some of the statistics given say that diapers cost a $100/month. That statistic blew me away. As an avid couponer and deal seeker, I don’t spend that much on the diapers I use in a month. If I spent a hundred dollars on diapers, I better be getting quite a few packs that would last me months. I am cheap. I embrace that and love that I seek a deal and watch what I spend.

I think the more important thing here is teaching low income folks how to use what they have to get what they need. Some of the poorest people I know are the pickiest and won’t use coupons.

If you struggle to make ends meet, watch what you spend, want to save more, or feel that you could make better use of your money, here are some tips to help you get diapers for cheap. It will take some work, but nothing in life is easy. You have to work for what you want.

Cheap Diaper Tips:

1) Clip Coupons

Buy the Sunday paper. If you can afford it, buy multiple copies. Clip the coupons for diapers. This is one of the first steps to saving money.

2) Take advantage of store sales.

Don’t use a coupon just because you have it. Do some research. Find out the cheapest place to buy diapers in your area. Wait till that store has a sale on diapers, pair the sale with your coupon, and stock up when the price is cheap enough. It is up to you to decide what is a cheap price. If you pay $10/pack for diapers now, $5 is a cheap, “stock up” price. The number of packs you buy and store away is up to you. Feel free to buy them in different sizes for a later time.

3) Check out the stores rewards programs.

A couple of my grocery stores have baby rewards programs. At one, if you spend $75 on diapers in a given period, you will get a $10 coupon (good on anything).

Stores like Rite Aid, CVS, and Walgreens will offer coupons off your next purchase for buying diapers at any given time. If diapers are $8.99 and you get $1 back for buying one pack, that can be a deal there.l If you have a $1/1 coupon for the diapers, you would pay $7.99 and get a $1 back. Buy another pack of diapers, pay $6.99 (using $1 diaper coupon and $1 coupon from the store) and keep doing it.

4) If you are low income and receive food stamps, check your grocery store for food deals that will get you a coupon off your next purchase when you buy a certain amount of food items. Then take that coupon and use it on diapers. That store coupon can be combined with a manufacturers coupon for additional coupons. Even better: wait till the store puts the diapers on sale, pair it with your coupons, and end up with very cheap diapers.

For example, if your store give you $10 back when you buy $25 worth of Pillsbury items, you can buy $25 worth of Pillsbury items on food stamps, then use the $10 coupon for diapers.

5) Forget brand loyalty.

Being brand loyal doesn’t help you. If the diapers don’t give your child a rash and don’t leak, there is no reason not to use them. Brand loyalty only makes you spend more money on something you have to throw in the trash.

6) Look for diaper deals online

Join a deal site such as Fat Wallet, Hot Coupon World, or Gotta Deal. They have online deals forums that will alert you to online deals for anything and everything under the sun. Those sites also have forums that alert you to deals at grocery stores, target, and walmart. You can find diapers deals there too. You can also learn how to coupon effectively. This will help you save money and become self-sufficient.

Amazon.com is also a wonderful place for deals. They often have diapers deals (you may find a step-by-step how-to for the deals when they come around on the websites I listed above). I have seen deals where people are paying around .10/diaper, on average. That come out to be $5/pack for a jumbo pack of Huggies sung and dry diapers in size 1.

7) Buy ahead and stock up!

When you find an awesome deal on diapers, stock up. There was a time that there was a deal on Earth’s Best diapers at Toys R Us. They were $3 a pack for the jumbo pack. I ended up buying 15 packs in two different sizes. That was a little over a year ago. I still have some of those diapers now!

This all may seem like a lot of information and it can be overwhelming. Just know that you are not alone in the quest to make ends meet. People think that coupons don’t save money, but it isn’t true. Learn how to utilize them correctly and you will save a lot. Nothing in life is easy. However, being able to provide for your children is important. You don’t have to be rich either.
