How to Find the Right Pair of Jeans, If You’re a Guy

What does it take to be a man? A good pair of jeans, of course!

In all seriousness, it can be extremely difficult for [heterosexual] men nowadays to find a pair of jeans that conveys the right message. Guys don’t want to be too flashy… but they don’t want to be too dull either. They just want to dress up, with no worries. Apparently not too many guys nowadays worry about looking gay with their jeans, and I’m here to correct that. Not only is this a how-to regarding finding the right pair of jeans, it’s also a how-to for guys to find themselves.

The first step in this how-to is avoiding trends. Guys shouldn’t be looking at what Dane Cook is wearing or, God forbid, what country singers are wearing. Forget that Hollywood look; guys shouldn’t spend the rest of their lives watching TV and emulating B.S. celebrities. Rather, they should be thinking for themselves.

This also takes care of a lot of the overpriced brands, coincidentally. Big name clothing knows how people think in regards to celeb-emulation, and they price their clothing accordingly. This doesn’t necessarily mean that guys shouldn’t spend a good amount of money on clothing; buying clothes isn’t about grabbing the cheapest pair off the rack. Instead, pay for a good fitting pair of jeans– it’s worth it.

How should a pair of jeans fit? It’s easy: straight. Guys are only as straight as their cut of jeans. Boot cuts, while still acceptable, walk a thin line between gay and straight. Not only do they actually fit on only a slight minority of American men, but when they do they still give a curvaceous silhouette. In fact, they look like bellbottoms sometimes too. Rarely does a pair of bootcut jeans work out and, given the look that spans time (the straight up and down look), it’s a better bet for guys to just go with a pair of straight-cut jeans, unless they want to show off their hips.

The most important aspect of the straight-cut jean relates to the shoe that is being worn underneath it. If the ankle opening is too large, the cuffs of the jeans will drag on the ground and eventually ruin the jeans. With small leg openings, the length of the jean doesn’t matter, and a tapered pair of jeans can look very good if done properly. Overall, it’s about proportion and, depending on the size of the guy, the legs of the jeans will vary in tightness.

Which brings up the next attribute: where are these jeans being worn? Is the guy going to a rodeo, or a rap concert? It’s difficult to wear a pair of jeans that’s too tight or too baggy without looking like a total buffoon.

This is where the crotch comes in. Guys shouldn’t chase a pair of jeans that makes a spectacle out of their junk– it can be embarrassing at times, if not all the time. But, more importantly, there needs to be room to breathe in those jeans! Bottom line: guys will never impress any ladies while sporting a cardboard corner for a crotch.

For that matter, what else are you carrying? Did you know they have jeans you can carry shotguns and six packs of beer in?
At least keep room for your keys, your wallet, and your cell phone in your mens’ jeans.

Another thing to keep in mind: where will you be wearing these jeans? You’re not going to bring a shotgun or a six pack to church are you? It’s common knowledge by now that guys can wear a good pair of jeans to a formal event, but it should be a straight fit, with a good pair of shoes, and a tapered ankle, and, WITH A DARK WASH. The dark wash can give a trouser look and, unless they’re rodeo jeans, can look very intelligent.

So we’ve got cut, comfort, and wash thus far… but there is one other factor worth mentioning: timelessness. Before buying a pair of jeans, one must ask himself ‘How long will these last?’ In terms of longevity, it’s hard not to mention rigid jeans because it takes roughly a year before they are broken in– as opposed to pre-broken, pre-holed jeans that are readily available from any clothing outlet, on or offline. Rigid jeans are also very consistent in their look, and will naturally mold to one’s body shape after a short period of washing.

So, that’s it; buying jeans can be more complicated than simply running to the store! Hopefully this guide will aide men to not waste their money on meaningless trends and spoiled looks. But it will cost money, so every guy should be prepared to spend.
