Using resources such as the internet and public records pin-pointing a person’s place of birth can be done in the comfort of your living room. Take note, obtaining a copy of a birth certificate may not be possible if you are not a direct relative of the person as these records are considered confidential.
Compile detailed information for the person you are researching. This information should include their full name, last known location and date of birth. If you are unable to locate all of this information, ask relatives or friends of the person to gain as much information as possible.

Thus, to gain access to a birth record you must be directly related to the person you’re wishing to locate.
If the birth record you are seeking is over 125 years old, the information is no longer considered confidential, thus you can request a copy of the birth certificate even if you are not a direct relative.
Do not claim to be a relative of the person when requesting birth records if you are not.
