How To Customize Your Wedding Flip Flops

If you can’t seem to find the right summer flip flops for your wedding dress, than quit the search and make them yourself. All you need is some creativity and a cheap pair of flip flops to work your magic.

Materials

It is hard to find the right color flip flops, so look for a base color that will complement or be close to a white or ivory. It doesn’t matter if it already has decorations on it; you should also try to find one that has a fairly substantial ‘thong’ so that you have plenty of room to embellish.

Other materials include sewing needles, thread, and a hot glue gun. These are all you need to affix anything you choose. The next part is put to you. You can buy materials that match the trim or material of your wedding dress or find similar items. Embellishments include lace, satin, beads (you will need some beading wire for this), small silk flowers, and velvet. Come up with an idea in mind before you go to the craft store, so you don’t end up buying more than you need when you see all the possibilities. You can even use iron on patches of characters or initials.

How to Assemble Different Materials

If you choose to cover the thong top with material, than you can either sew it on or glue it. Make sure you measure the shape correctly and serge a hem before gluing or sewing it onto the thong. The serged hem will keep the material from unraveling and irritating your foot. Whether you choose to use material coverings or not, be sure to wrap the part that goes in between your toes before adding anything or your embellishments could cause chafing.

Silk flowers with a little ribbon or braided piping can make a nice addition to your outfit. Match the flowers in your bouquet in miniature and sew them on in clusters at the widest part of the thong. You can even sew a larger one at the thong between your toes. Sewing works better than hot gluing because they are less likely to move around and fall off with extended wear. To add piping, however, you can easily hot glue it on to the edges without worry of it coming apart. Plastic flip flops aren’t the best to work with if you are sewing or gluing anything on, so avoid these for ones that have a more ‘material’ top or faux leather.

Beaded flip flops will be a little more advanced to pull off. If you just want some beads dropping down, than you can easily stitch some small pony beads (or round beads) into the front by using a piece of suede rope or trim braiding, and gluing the last bead onto the rope and the bead in front of it. Embroidered beading will take much longer, but it is a great way to customize a one of kind look. Embroider on a cloth that you have already fitted for each thong and match the designs by using a washable marker sketching on the cloth. Seed beads work great for this kind of delicate undertaking.

For a lacy look, choose a wide lace sold by the yard. This can be sewn or glued to the flip flop top without any trouble. You can match the trim on your wedding dress or just add a little feminine finesse to your foot wear.

When you are done be sure that the embellishments are on good, and that they are comfortable against your foot. It’s better to find out now and make adjustments than to find out the hard way after hours of wear on your feet.

So have fun, and let your sense of style shine.
