The first step is to find some letters. Look at letter shaped cookie cutter, font printed form your computer, or even stencils. Look for different shapes and large sizes. The “MOM” Mother’s Day Cards will need to be big enough to include all of the things that the kids want to write inside.

Once you have found a variety of font images, and found the M’s and O’s, you will want to lay them out on some regular drawing paper, trace them and cut them out.

I like to lay out the “MOM” side by side so the edges are touching. This will keep it as one large card.

Lay your “MOM” letter patterns out on your heavy water color paper. Trace them lightly with pencil and then cut them out

Once your “MOM” shapes are cut out the kids is ready to start painting. I like to take a paper plate and lay out a palette of vibrant and pastel red, yellow, and green paint colors from my watercolor paints for the kids. You can totally use acrylic or tempura paint as well though!

Now, use some of your water to dilute the acrylic paint, tempura paint, one watercolor paint and gentle start brushing it along the edges of your ‘MOM” mother’s day card. Slowly work your way in to the middle of the letters.

I like to add more water as I work my way in so that the paint becomes more sheer and translucent towards the center of the letter.

Let this first coat of paint dry, and then add details like polka dots and stripes.

Allow your “MOM” Mother’s Day Cards to dry thoroughly and the kids are finished making their hand made gift for their mother.

For more detail or three dimensional details to the homemade mother’s day cards try using puff paint. If you use puff paint on the homemade cards, then you will need to let them dry about 24 hours or the paint will be smeared when you put it in the envelope.

Don’t forget about glitter and flat backed jewels that can be glued on for a little homemade pizzazz.
