Homemade Dumbbell Stand

If your working on building your own in home gym or would just like a place to store your dumbbells, but don’t want to spend a large amount of money on a dumbbell stand, this easy to follow step by step will show you how to build your own at a fraction of the cost. With a few metal rods and some metal bars you can create your very own dumbbell stand for any size space.

Materials for this project
*Metal rods
*Metal bars
*Welding gear
*Dremel or metal cutting saw
*Rubber stoppers
*Drill
*Nuts and bolts

Preparing your materials for your dumbbell stand

Before you can begin constructing your homemade dumbbell stand you need to first decide on an area to place your stand. You should allow for four to eight feet in length and a foot and a half to a two foot wide space. Within this space you want to the measure and mark the height of the dumbbell stand onto your wall. Depending on the surface where you are placing your dumbbell stand you may want to cut or purchase a metal sheet to go underneath your stand. Rubber will also work, but is not as strong as metal. Using your Dremel, measure and cut six pieces equal to the height that your dumbbell stand will be from a metal bar. These pieces will be used as your corner and side pieces and will help to support your stand. Attach rubber stoppers to one end of each of the pieces and stand one in each corner of your space, placing the other two in the center of the four corner pieces. Measure the distance in between each metal bar and cut four smaller pieces from a metal rod for each side to act as side spacers and extra support for the corner and middle metal bars. Find the length between two corner pieces and cut six pieces from your metal bar that equal that length. The typical length for a dumbbell is around a foot, so if you want to have two rows of dumbbells the little space between will make it easy to pick up each dumbbell from your dumbbell stand. For added support you can also cut spacers to fit the front and back of your stand, but the side pieces as well as the front and middle connecting pieces should provide enough support for any weight.

Constructing your dumbbell stand

To begin construction on your dumbbell stand, start by placing a rubber stopper onto each one of your metal bars and placing them in the four corners of your space. Connect the two front metal bars together by placing two of your previously cut metal rods in between them, one at the top and one at the bottom by welding them together. Repeat this process for both your side and back pieces as well, allowing the weld to cool before testing each with your own body weight and continuing to the next step. For the next step, place your side spacers in between the middle, front and back pieces, one at the top and one at the bottom. Repeating this process for both sides as well as repeating the test done previous. Once all of your welds have cooled, drill a hole into the front of your corner pieces, at the top and at the bottom where the weld joining the two corner pieces and metal rod spacers together was placed. Drill the hole large enough that a metal bolt can fit through and complete the process by adding a nut to the end of each bolt, repeating the process for the back of your dumbbell stand. Test each connection once more with your own body weight and weld each connection again to ensure a good hold. Spray your entire dumbbell stand down with an anti-rust metal sealant.
