Foods to Avoid If You Have Renal Failure

When a person has renal failure it means the kidneys cannot filter the toxins that accumulate in their body from the things they eat and drink, and the medications they take. Because of the inability of the kidneys to perform this function these wastes build up in the blood system and can cause illness and even death.

Most individuals with renal failure have to take medications and receive dialysis treatments. But a change in diet is also an important part of managing your health when you have renal failure.

There are many foods that contain minerals and substances that are especially harmful to a person with renal failure. Below is a list of foods to avoid if you have renal failure.

Avoid foods high in potassium if you have renal failure

Not everyone with renal failure has to limit the amount of potassium they consume, but for some it’s absolutely important, especially if there is too much potassium in the blood.

Some foods to avoid if you have renal failure that are high in potassium include but are not limited to, bananas, potatoes, avocado, meats and fish, and kiwi.

You may not have to completely avoid these foods, but only reduce your intake. Your doctor will be able to help you figure out if potassium is dangerous for you to consume, so speak to your doctor before eliminating certain foods from your diet.

Avoid foods high in sodium if you have renal failure

Foods that are very high in sodium are canned soups and other canned foods, packaged foods, and processed meats. Too much sodium is unhealthy for anyone and especially if you have renal failure. Avoid foods that are high in sodium and try to reduce the amount of salt you use on foods.

Avoid foods high in protein if you have renal failure

Foods that are very high in protein increase the amount of waste that accumulates in the blood. When you have renal failure the last thing you want to do is increase wastes. Although protein does not have to be totally eliminated it is best to reduce the amount of protein you consume.

Foods to avoid if you have renal failure that are very high in protein are eggs, meat and poultry, beans, and dairy.

Avoid foods that are high in phosphorus if you have renal failure

Foods that are high in phosphorus include dairy products, sodas and beer, beans, peas, and nuts. When a person has renal failure the kidneys aren’t able to filter out excess phosphorus in the blood, so it’s important to limit your intake of foods that contain a lot of phosphorus.

Every renal patient is different and will require a unique diet to help manage their health. This information is only intended to provide a general idea of foods to avoid. It is not meant to imply that every person with renal failure must totally avoid these foods. Only a doctor can accurately decide which foods to avoid if you have renal failure.
