Fish Oil Vs. Flaxseed Oil – Advantages & Disadvantages

Fish oil and flaxseed oil have both gained popularity recently because of the high levels of omega-3 fatty acids they contain. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids that provide many health advantages. They have been shown to decrease cholesterol and blood pressure and reduce inflammation. Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of both fish oil and flaxseed oil supplements, and a discussion with a healthcare professional, will help make the choice between the two easier.

Scientific studies have shown that both fish oil and flaxseed oil can lower cholesterol. The omega-3 fatty acids in flaxseed oil also reduce blood pressure and prevent heart disease. Flaxseed oil has been used to reduce inflammation in people with lupus, gout and other forms of arthritis. The advantages of fish oil are similar to flaxseed oil. It is a natural anti-inflammatory, but fish oil is also being studied as a treatment for Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Fish oil has been reported as a supplement that might lower the risk of suicide and depression.

Both fish oil and flaxseed oil are available at most super markets and health food stores. Flaxseed oil comes in a liquid or capsule, and fish oil is only available in capsule form. Eating fish like salmon, tuna and sardines twice a week should provide enough omega-3 fatty acids for most people. However, those who dislike fish can benefit from taking fish oil supplements. Mercury is one disadvantage of fish and fish oil, which is why some people prefer to take flaxseed oil. Flaxseed oil must be taken with food, and a tablespoon of the liquid supplement can be easily mixed into food and drinks.

Both fish oil and flaxseed oil have a disadvantage when it comes to the absorption of other nutrients. Flaxseed oil can inhibit the absorption of other supplements and certain medications. For this reason, it is best to take flaxseed oil alone. Fish oil is known to limit the body’s ability to absorb vitamins A, E, D and K. It may also cause bad breath and slimy bowel movements. Taking fish oil in excess could increase the chances of bleeding, and should be taken by people on blood thinners.
